Spy photographers managed to snap this photo of the 2012 BMW ActiveE while being towed to an unknown facility in Germany. For the first time, we get a sneak peek of the car’s powerplant.Based on this photo, we can see a huge battery pack just on top of an electric motor. The size of the battery would most likely require a hood with a larger bonnet.
Previous information state that the BMW ActiveE will feature a rear engine and will be a rear wheel drive all electric vehicle. Though the car is based on the BMW 1 series, the body will be heavily modified for the new propulsion systems. The batteries will be put in places where the drive shaft, engine and gas tank used to be. For intelligent energy use, the advanced CPU is put directly on top of the motor. The ActiveE delivers 170 hp (125 kW) and 180 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque available from 0 RPM. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at 90 mph. The BMW ActiveE pilot trials will start in 2011. As of now, the car is still undergoing intensive road testing.
