At the International Media Launch of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, it was revealed that BMW will also release a plug-in hybrid model that will be launched in 2015.
The plug in hybrid drive which drives the rear wheels via an electric motor gives the car an efficient all-wheel drive system. BMW will offer the 2 Series Active Tourer with a front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configuration.
In these photos, the extra “fuel door†is visible on the front left fender which hides a socket for the charging cable. Just like the BMW i8 or the upcoming BMW X5 xDrive40e, the power cord will charge the lithium-ion battery.
The standard BMW 2 Series Active Hybrid Tourer will be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine at the front and an electric motor in the rear. The second power source placed at the rear axis would make for a four-wheel drive, allowing for front, rear and all-wheel drive driving modes.
Final power output has not bee confirmed yet but 190 hp is the rumored number and 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) is expected to come in under eight seconds.
