The BMW 5 Competition at the Transfagarasan Highway

The Transfagarasan Highway is probably the world’s best driving road and is located in Romania. The 90-kilometer serpentine stretch of tarmac that snakes through the Carpathian Mountains is not only the most amazing set of fantastic corners but cuts through stunning mountain scenery.

It may not be as pretty as the Stelvio, but if you’re into driving, it’s the safest place to drive. We can see the BMW M5 Competition running around those corners with its 617 hp, twin-turbocharged V8 in these pictures.

For a road like the Transfagarasan Highway, you would want a smaller, lighter, less powerful car than the M5. Visions of overcooking a high-altitude corner with no barriers in a 600-plus horsepower, 4,000 lb sedan gives me willies. However, the BMW M5 Competition is a surprisingly competent vehicle. So it should be able to tackle the biggest road in Romania with ease.

The particular car in these pictures is sporting a Snapper Rocks Blue paint job and adds richness to the scenery. The blue shines through the sepia-toned backdrop and makes some epic shots. It doesn’t have a supercar’s elegance, but the BMW M5 is a pretty car, and its polish adds the requisite color splash.

In the famous Top Gear episode, the three hosts drive Transfagarasan in three separate high-powered convertible supercars. The Aston Martin DBS Volante, Ferrari California, and Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder.

Thanks to this famous episode, most enthusiasts have dreams of driving drop-top supercars up and down the now popular mountain pass. Although those cars may be more enjoyable, the BMW M5, with its tenacious all-wheel-drive grip and smart electronic stability systems, is likely to be the more capable, simpler, and more comfortable.
