[Video] BMW 530 MLE: South African legend

The BMW 530 MLE may not be a very popular Bimmer outside of South Africa, but it is one of the biggest cars in the brand’s history. The 530 MLE was based on the E12 5 Series chassis and is essentially the precursor to the BMW M5, even though it was not a proper M car. It was still a car designed by the M Division for racing and then sold for road use. It’s also one of the most iconic cars in the history of South Africa.

From this video, we will get to see a recently restored BMW 530 MLE. It is from the first production over 100 cars, which make it really rear. It also standout with its white painting and M Division livery. With time, the E12 5 Series is becoming increasingly appreciated, and the 530 MLE is probably the best-looking example of it.

Luis Malhou of Custom Restorations in Vereeniging found and restored this particular car. In the past, Malhou has reestablished several 530 MLEs and is the go-to person for MLE restoration. In coordination with BMW Classic, this resto-job was done and looks like it rolled off the showroom floor yesterday, despite being originally on sale nearly five decades ago.

Engine

An M30 3.0liter inline-six engine powers the BMW 530 MLE through a five-speed manual gearbox. This powers the rear wheels only. It also makes an inline-six noise of glorious, period-correct motorsport, and it’s completely intoxicating. Stop reading these words to really appreciate the car, though, and watch the video. The car is a part of the history of South Africa and BMW, as it sets the tone for cars such as the BMW M535i and the M5 generation E28. However, more than that, it is just a brilliant car to look at and listen to. So check that out.
