[Video] Joe Achilles’ review on BMW M5 vs. Audi RS6 Avant

The new Audi RS6 Avant is a fascinating competitor to the BMW M5 Rivalry as it uses a very similar formula but with a twist. Both cars use 600-ish horsepower, eight-speed ZF automatics, and all-wheel drive 4.0-ish liter twin-turbo V8s. The BMW M5 is, however, a sedan, and the Audi RS6 is a wagon. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but which is better, really? In this Joe Achilles video, we will find out.

Recently, Achilles spent a week in the BMW M5 Competition, then spent a week in the Audi RS6 Avant without wasting too much time in between. So he was able to make a precise distinction between the two cars and properly judge them. He only drives the RS6 in his analysis but draws parallels between it and the M5 throughout, attempting to decide which car is better.

Both cars are astonishingly fast in terms of absolute speed, but the M5 is faster. The time recorded by his RaceBox for the Audi RS6 Avant was 3.31 seconds, which is three seconds faster than the time claimed by Audi. Although his time reported for the BMW M5 Competition was 2.99 seconds. So the Bimmer is slightly quicker. However, he does remember that it seems that Audi has trouble accelerating hard within the first five meters or so. However, after the initial delay, he reported that it seemed to pull every bit as hard as the M5.

The BMW M5 is the sharper car as well but just by a little. The Audi RS6 Avant is fantastic handling, a truly thrilling car to drive, and one that defies physics through some twisties. The M5 is just a bit more precise on the lane, however, and definitely more so on the track.

The Audi-RS6 on-road advantage is in the comfort of its travel. It is one of the world’s best sports cars for driving, and honestly a bit better than the BMW. Driving daily with speed is better and smoother, as the more flexible suspension keeps it planted over the bumpier pavement.

Final Verdict

However, Achilles selected the BMW M5 Competition as the car he would like to have in the end. It’s a close contest, and the Audi RS6 has a lot to like, but it’s the M5 Comp that he thinks is better for him.
