For 30 years, BMW has pioneered automotive recycling, refining techniques to recover valuable materials from end-of-life vehicles. The BMW Group’s Recycling and Dismantling Centre (RDC) has been at the forefront, transforming vehicle waste into reusable resources. These efforts contribute to environmental sustainability and more efficient car production processes, benefiting both the industry and consumers.
The RDC processes thousands of vehicles each year, extracting key components and recyclable materials such as copper, steel, and aluminium. Functional parts are still repurposed for resale, while the rest of the vehicle is dismantled and shredded for recycling. BMW’s innovations in this space ensure that these materials can be used again to produce new cars.
The RDC has become a global leader in recycling, with its findings shared on platforms like the International Dismantling Information System (IDIS), used by recyclers worldwide. Through these efforts, BMW supports a more sustainable future and demonstrates the financial viability of circular processes in the automotive industry.
As electric vehicles become more common, the RDC also focuses on recycling high-voltage batteries, positioning BMW as a key player in the circular economy. This commitment to reducing waste and conserving resources continues to drive the company’s advancements in automotive design and manufacturing.
