BMW’s HypersonX Ushers in a New Acoustic Era for the Neue Klasse

Beginning with the all-electric Neue Klasse in 2025, BMW is introducing a holistic driving and user experience defined by innovative hardware and software. Central to this new chapter is the HypersonX soundscape, created by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio. Comprising 43 individual sound signals and newly developed drive audio for Personal Mode and Sport Mode, the HypersonX suite adapts its tonal palette to match any driving situation. This real-time approach fosters a more direct emotional connection between driver and vehicle by overlaying precise, multidimensional sounds onto every movement.

Such a leap forward in sound design is made possible by the revolutionary BMW Operating System X and a dedicated control unit that underpins the audio architecture of the Neue Klasse. Paired with improvements in vehicle character, driving dynamics and user-interface functionality, HypersonX aims to deliver an experience that aligns with BMW’s signature driving pleasure. Renzo Vitale, Creative Director of Sound Design at the BMW Group, highlights the importance of “precision, warmth and lightness” in shaping a unique identity for each Neue Klasse model.

HypersonX draws inspiration from natural tones and influences in art and science while maintaining an overall reduction in complexity. The resultant acoustic palette feels rich and minimalist at once, with fewer basic notes than before but greater depth, “colour,” and dimensional layers. This sophisticated layering extends into the cabin, where accelerating evokes transitions through three-dimensional sound fields that amplify the sensation of speed and BMW’s hallmark dynamics.

BMW has also emphasised human warmth within the new sound environment. The lower and middle frequencies are tuned to cultivate a cosier atmosphere, while intuitive controls and complementary lighting add to an overall sense of well-being. In addition, the welcome sound leverages recordings of BMW Group Design Studio employees speaking in their native languages, instilling a personal, empathetic quality. Isolated elements from these chorused voices are woven into the composition, greeting occupants with a distinctive warmth that blends seamlessly into the broader HypersonX system.

Behind the scenes, more than nine million sound instances, all rooted in BMW’s acoustic DNA, were generated using a new algorithm. After extensive filtering, the team developed a cohesive, multi-layered soundscape to reflect BMW’s evolving identity. The outcome is an emotional yet subtle auditory design that forms a human-centred bond between drivers, passengers and the Neue Klasse vehicles—an evocative showcase of BMW’s ongoing commitment to technological and experiential innovation.
