Re: Motor Dies
I suspect the jolt may have loosened an air hose. When I extracted the car from the garage last night, I shook all hoses connected to the air intake to check for play. That didn't fix it. I had to apply enough gas to keep the car revving at 1K for about 2 minutes or so. I then...
Re: Motor Dies
Thanks for your responses. Its not the battery and I couldn't find any dislodged hoses. I drove it a bit keeping the revs up on low gears and it fixed itself. Still don't know what was the cause, but the car is due for a once over with my mechanic.
car is '93 318is manual M42 engine.
While getting a ticket for unattended parking, I forgot I had the car in 1st and let go of the clutch. Car lurched forward but with foot on brakes did not go very far. I restarted the engine and it immediately died. In order to keep it alive I had to give it...
Re: Changing A/T fluid
Glad to hear you got it replaced under warranty. For those of us already out of warranty, it'll be painful for the kids - no more college fund. Read somewhere that the GM gear boxes are notorious for valve solenoid failure and it manifests itself as no reverse gear...
Re: Left rear tyre wearing faster than right rear
Hi Detach8. I'm running directionals and so the only rotation I can do is between front and back. Not much help there. I find your tyre pressures a bit low for the much heavier e90. That translates to 29psi front and 32psi rear. My e36 has...
Re: Changing A/T fluid
Thanks guys for your responses. Sorry for late reply- didn't know there was an update to this thread. I've recently received a 3rd opinion. He says at this age it is still a good idea to change the fluid. But due to the age of the fluid in the transmission, which by now...
Re: Left rear tyre wearing faster than right rear
I rush up the multistory carpark every morning. My wife parks in the open. Besides multistory carparks are tight right turns, where the inner wheel will be scrabbling for traction so I'd expect the driver side tyre to show more wear.
I've...
As title suggest, does any forum member experience the same? I have an e36 and e46 in the family and both cars exhibit the same tyre wear. I googled and found a US site that tells the opposite story. I would expect if unequal tyre wear is a symptom of unequal lateral weight distribution then...
Would like to hear your opinions on changing A/T fluid on the lifetime filled auto transmissions. I've read the UK and US forums and the board is divided on this topic. I'd like to keep my car forever. Would changing the fluid at 130000 km cause it to die a premature death? General consensus is...
Several months ago I replaced mywife's e46 control arm bushings with powerflex. The original has rotted and torn so after reading endorsements in other forums I bit the bullet and ordered the powerflex. I don't drive my wife's car that much so can't elaborate on whether its a huge improvement...
My CD changer has just given up the ghost. I want to replace it with a CD changer that plays MP3. I do need plug and play capability though - ie, I want the changer to slot in the original location, and don't want to splice and solder any wires.
Car is a '03 e46 with BMW business radio w/ tape...
Re: Do you turn off your aircon before starting engine?
The stepper motor makes a zzzt zzzt noise as it moves the flaps - on the e36 at least. The e46 is so silent you have to take it on faith. And as far as switching to fresh air... like I said its a habit. The car is parked in the hot sun...
Re: Throttle Body Spacers - Whats the use?
You got me checking out their website. A swirling mass of air does have more energy than if its flowing straight. Only thing is it still has to twist and turn to get to the manifold. BMW spent lots of man hours tuning your plumbing to increase air...
Re: ground clearance - tyre pressure effects?
Lower pressure does not have an appreciable effect on ground clearance. It does allow the tire to compress more when it hits the bottom of the hump. Thats probably the reason you scraped. You also stand a higher chance of bending your rims and...
Re: Noisy Tyre Question
Or crank up your stereo. Seriously... Most tires become noisy after the softer compound wears off. Michelin Pilots are notorious for noise but seems to last longer than you want to keep them because of the hard compound. If its not uneven wear or worn out rubber...
Re: Do you turn off your aircon before starting engine?
Out of habit I not only turn off the a/c but set it to fresh air. I even listen for the familiar "zzzt zzzt" of the flaps moving to fresh before shutting off the engine. I do that on my e36 and my wife's e46. But the consequence is akin...
Re: K&N air filter better then stock?
That's worse. Reminds me of the old days when we'd stick a fish in somebody's hubcabs. The car stinks and the owner would wash it but still can't get rid of the smell.
