630 vs 645

I recently test drove a 630 and a 645 coupe.

Noticed that the acceleration, especially from stop, for the 630 was smoother and quicker, despite the higher engine capacity of the 645. I know the 630 has a newer engine.

In the 645, I had to kick-down before it accelerates. The acceleration on the 630 was a lot more responsive. The effect was a bit like driving a 318 with valvetronic versus a 320 or 325 without valvetronic.

Anyone knows why?

Re: 630 vs 645

i think the 645i is a tad nose heavy and weighs more overall, the first couple of seconds is sluggish to pull but once it hit the torque peak, man... it just keep going.
i test drove the 630i cab (heavier than the coupe), didn't impress me.
overall the 630i is a more balanced car in the e63 stable but it is not a sub 6 sec car for century sprint. the 650i should be awesome.

PML has 630i coupe for test drive now?

Re: 630 vs 645

I drove an X5 4.4 for 1 month in the US. It's got the same engine as the 645.

All I can say is, that 8-cylinder engine is simple out of this world. Relentless... If I can choose between a 630 and 645, there is no doubt which one I'd go for.

I was on the AYE and traffic was too heavy for me to have enuf road to pull the 645.
Remember seeing some spec sheets that the 645 is abt 100-150kg heavier
Agree that the 650 will be awesome. Think it shd be out anytime.
Lots of juicy details on the BMW UK website -> http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/index

Yes, they have a 630 test drive coupe at the Alexandra showroom.

This is probably due to the engine configuration. 630 is a inline 6 while the 645 is a V8. Engineers will tell you that the 6 inline is the most balanced engine hence the smoothest. The V8 are thumpy.

Re: 630 vs 645

the 630 is actually 125kg lighter... dont know if there's really a change of engine thou... as in a 2nd gneration 6... the specs i actually have is 258bhp@6600rpm / 221 lb ft@2500-400rpm 0-62mph @ 6.5s

the BMWcar mag i'm reading actually favours the 630 over the 645 ( sept 2005 issue)
n the price diff b/w tthe two is slightly less than 6k pounds.... hence in which would be a no brainer coz the price diff here is almost 50k rite??!!!!!

Re: 630 vs 645

if u want... i can lend u the mag... pretty detailed stuffs in the comparsions..
hope it will help u in making that decision... :)

Re: 630 vs 645

i think for local roads, the 630 is more than enough, especially if its the new 250+ hp engine.. to exploit the advantages of 645 power will take you pretty much outside legal limits.
ive always preferred in line 6 to V engines. and the handling balance is definitely better.

what you mentioned about the 3 series is also true - a lot of people used to find the 318 feels about as quick as the 320 on take off because it weighed 100 plus kilos less. but on the highway, 318 will always lose out.

but if money no object, or you want people to see u got big engine, or u want to makan big time on the NS, then get the 645.

if money no object etc etc... guess he'll probably get the ulitmate liao la... M6 nothing less!

Re: 630 vs 645

Thanks for all the info. I've never owned a car with a V-config engine so the info abt in-line being a smoother engine and providing better handling is interesting to know. Learnt something new.

The higher capacity engines usually weigh more so somehow seem to negate the higher torque output. A 100kg doesn't sound like a lot for a car (it's like carrying an extra adult all the time) but from my experience, it does impact the acceleration from a stop position. Anyway, I'm curious to see how the new 650 performs.

Yeah, there's never such a thing as too much power in a car. As in money. Alas, money is always never enough when it comes to feeding that passion for cars!!

O yes, the M6 is a dream car. It'll be nice if it comes in a cabrio version, like the M3 cab. From the pic gallery, saw that a M6 showed up for a recent meetup? Drool....

Thanks for offering to lend me the mag. don't know how I get it from u tho! LOL!
It's ok lah. When the time comes to make that decision (and by which time I think it'll be 630 vs 650), I'll rely on the drive experience.....and whether my heart wins the argument over my brain!

Re: 630 vs 645

My philosophy is this:

If i were the get a 6er and

If it were a convertible, it will be no bigger then a 630, in fact 625 will also do.

If it was a coupe, then I will consider something bigger, even up to M6.
