AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2

Got my E46 sports edition's four wheels changed to AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2 tyres (225/45/ZR17) after struggling for grip and noise in my previous CSC tyres.

Originally only plan to get tyres.... was quoted ps2 for $1350 cheapest due to staggered. Bridgestone Potenza RE050A and S-03 pole position also same price. Dunlop sports maxx, nobody seems to have my size. :(

I approach Daniel from Leong Seng and he gave me an irresistable offer. ACS Type IV Replicas Racing (with studs) with PS2 and trade in my old tyres (left about 40%) and rims (with scratches) all at $1.7K! Too me it is a good offer, cos the rim only cost about 100 bucks each in the package. Always wanted an ACS rim but beyond reach due to cost. Replica really looks cool. Taiwanese are really genius biz man. :)

Also change my brake pads (to a 50% reduction in brake dust type, cant remember the brand) and air filter to K&N. At the same also service my car since only left 3K to servicing.

A couple of questions ponder me though i took a risk:
1. Decided to do without the staggered configuration and op for all the same, adv is can rotate front and back tyres. Pls comment.
2. Really cannot understand why ACS Replica rims are so cheap.
3. Cant feel the difference from the K&N. Any comments?
4. The brake pads doesnt seem to be as sensitive as the original BMW ones. I am not sure it is consider poorer grip or it is due to the no. of things I have replaced, e.g rims, tyres, brake pads.

I shall post my review of the tyres once I have tried them more thoroughly. First impression is damn quiet and steering immediately lightens (not sure is the rims or tyres or both). Hopefully some gurus here can gave me some answers to the above......

Cheers,
Woods

hi there dude, to ans ur quest, hope it helps.

1. staggered usually is slightly better by giving more contact patch to the rear wheels, but non staggered u get to rotate, so all's good .. no biggie.

2. MOST reps are cheap, what u should be worried about is all strong the rims are, BUT so far i don't think anyone has experienced dents or soft rims.

3. I'm guessing ur K&N is a drop in filter, u do actually gain, but very minimal... so don't actually think ur goanna get more than 5bhp ( this is already very very good). Think of it more as ur allowing ur car to breathe much better than the stock filter.

4. BMW brakepads are the most sensitive of the lot, hence alot of brake dust. Depending on brands, pads have diff kind of character, some work very well under high temp, some don't ... give it abit of time.. sometimes the "break-in" after abit of driving.. then they might "bite" more. would help if you rem the brand.

Anyways .. hope i kinda ans ur questions here..

Hey Shaaz,

Thanks for your valuable comments...

1. I think ability to rotate tyres are more impt to me. I am not the racing type but i do floor at times depending on moods. Hehe.

2. Just have to keep my fingers crossed for the rims.

3. Thou cannot feel the impact of K&N, will adjust my expectations and mentality as per what u suggest to make me feel better... haha.

4. After driving for about 100km, I think my pads are better. I believe the braking force and distance is the same, just that it isnt as sensitive. I call the shop and they confirm that I need to 'run-in' the pads for about 500km as there is a thin protective layer before the main portion comes in. Sounds convincing though I am sceptical. Willing to accept this becos, they say if I am unhappy after 500km, can go back to replace my Bendix Adv to Bendix Ultimate for better grip. Is that so? I am not sure, frankly.....

Cheers,
Woods

Hi woods, glad to be of help.

Bendix Ultimate are VERY good brake pads. I'm using them myself, these are the pads that work very well under high temp, but for street driving .. so so la, the stock works best for street. For your new pads.. just dun jam or do any hard stops yea??.. take it easy and just wait for it to really bed-in, once that's done... you can brake harder...

Enjoy ur current mods dude, and those tyres are a blast to have!!!!

shaaz.

ps2 rocks dude. no turning back

Re: AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2

Hey Guys,

Yet to really test out the ps2 due to the brake pads still not seasoned yet..... Will post a report once tested.... and I have confident and believe my research for tyres over the last month and came to a conclusion on ps2 are going to rock!

Cheers,
Woods

Hi Woods,

Wondering how is your ACS replicas doing. I am also aiming for the 18' ACS replicas with PS2 which Leong Seng commented can last for quite a while and one of the lightest tires around. Would appreciate your feedback or any bros advise/comments!

Re: AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2

If your car is not making serious power, it's quite unnecessary to go with a staggered setup.

It will slow your car down and offer no significant handling advantage. You car will probably understeer more at the limit since the rears have more grip than the fronts. Not to mention it's also more expensive to replace/maintain...

If I were to get a set of replicas, I'd get something that's more accurate to the originals. AC type 4 starts from 19" and with just a glance, one would immediately know that they are rip-offs (harsh term, I know) if they are anything less than 19".

But to each his own. As long as you're happy, all's goood!

Hi Bro,

Thanks for your comments! I am also considering this other combo if I can stretch it a bit: OZ Ultraleggera 18" with PS2 which, I was told, is the one with the correct offset for the E90. If all come to nought, I may push the stock rear rims out with spacers. Or should I be using spacers on all 4 wheels? Again your input is valuable.

Cheers,

So far so good, no complaints. Pls note that the PS2 has a soft side wall and will easily cut or peel if you mount kerb which happen to me recently :furious:

Lucky I got them glued back.... :yummie:

Got a few queries on how the ACS Replicas look, here it goes...

Bro Woods,

Nice! So far so good eh! How about FC, noticeably up? Ride harsh? Cos I am thinking of 18" but with same tires as yours, or 2nd choice the Dunlops..

Cheers

Re: AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2

Wats FC? dont quite get your qn.

If 18" you got to be careful cos they will be damn close to your car body. Of course price will go up by about 1K or so. Visit www.tirerack.com, Dunlop Sport Maxx is rated above Michelin PS2, perhaps can considered if not taking staggered. Let me know if you chose that, I wanna try.....

I chose Michelin PS2 over Dunlop becos of branding.... thou both are pretty good tyres.

IIRC the Type IV Light Alloys start from 18" and Type IV Racing from 20". :D

Since they're of a five-spoke design, be mindful if the brake discs will appear too small if you upsize your rims.

Re: AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2

Hi Woods, sorry FC in short for fuel consumption, did you suffer any? Is your ride a little bit harsher now, hope not! I may go for the sportsmaxx because of insufficient moolah!

Hi Beemmeup, thanks for your info, yes it may look that way doesn't it, hmmmmm, but i still like the ACS reps leh, maybe 17" then? veri confused now...........

Re: AC Schnitzer Type IV Replica and Michelin PS2

FC no change... full tank to fuel indicator light is about 500km. But pick up like a bit harsher and draggy, not sure is due to heavier rims than the original M68 or the K&N filter...

Hi Woods,. tks for feedback! I think drag is inevitable for bigger rims but since FC is not affected, I am very tempted, hmmmm.
