Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Hi,
Need some advise from you experts guys out there:
1. Am driving a E46 318 series(sport edition). Am finding the car rather lethargic and slow during pick up.
I am not really looking into high performance or big changes; but enough to feel the difference in the current performance.
Any advice to enhance the performance without burning a big hole in my pocket?
Have also change the original my rims to Breyton flame which helps the fuel consumption.
Was told to change to high performance spark plugs, K&N filter as well as spring booster.

Will these really help?
Your advice is really appreciated.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Drop by R2D at bt batok, he will advise u honestly what to change or what are pointless to mod.
U may want to consider a device to alter ur throttle response. No increase in hp but should resolve ur lethargic pick up. U can try on someone's car to see if u like it, before committing.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Thanks bro.
Appreciate your advice.
Will give a call to R2D and talk to him.
Regards.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

wallet easy mods with some improvements but don't expect WOW effect :D

ignition upgrades + performance plugs
aftermarket drop-in air filter + air scoop
sprint booster/velocity for throttle remap
very light rims -> this one will be expensive

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Thanks WT.
Will the Spring booster increase fuel consumption drastically?

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

There is only so much you can extract out of the 4 cylinder block, so spend wisely on mods. Do bear in mind any % gains from the smaller engine is smaller than from the larger counterparts, so any talk about X% gains from chipping/piggybacking - discount it downwards.

What you should be doing, is to reduce some sprung/unsprung weight from your car. That means any unnecessary items in the car, in the trunk.......

Breyton wheels are not light. And the tyres, what are you running on?

The minor mods like spark plugs, filter/CAI or exhaust helps in efficieny, but a dyno test should show minimal power gain in relation to the $$$ spent. Just do it for a feel good factor. The likes of sprint booster simply amplies your throttle signal, so be prepared for heavier FC since there are no real power gain.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

it's sprint and spring ... wait your car doink doink doink ... kekeke

yes = because of the improvement in throttle response you like to vroom vroom

no (may be tiny bit ) = because little taps the car move swiftly and no need to step hard like stock

fuel consumption depends on your right foot. so, perfect your right foot sensitivity

Thanks bro.
Your advices makes lots of sense.
Agree there is not much one can do to increase any hp for this model.

Not particularly heavy, similar to F1 Assym and PS2.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Hi kenntona,

May i ask about Potenza R001? Thks.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

How about CSC3? heee.....

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

I dun have the numbers for R001, but generally, Potenzas are heavier than than peers. Examples:

On 255/35R18 profile......

RE11/RE050A weighs 27 lbs
F1 Assym weighs 24 lbs
PS2 weighs 24 lbs
CSC3 weighs 23 lbs

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Hi kenntona,

Thks. I would like seek ur recommendtn which r the few more affordable performance tyres. Let say in size of 225 or 235/40/R18. N in view of rd noise and wet grip...

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

The range is tight, from PS2, CSC3, F1 Assym to RE11.

I have personally used CSC3, PS2 and RE11 on the same car, and RE11 gripped the best, but noisy and heavy. PS2 is the best bet, but sidewall a tad too soft for my liking.

F1 Assym is plaqued by cracked sidewall issues, stories abound this forum.

Have also used CSC2, Dunlop SP900 and Falken ST115 on previous e46s before.... waste of money, really.

Re: Advice on basic upgrade of performance

Hi kenntona,

Thks u for all valuable info.

I agree Falken is a waste of moni. Previous experience of runng for a period, noise level go up and seems harden. Vehicle also skidded on rainy day, nt fast abt 100km plus minus and nt harsh brakg....

Had seen magz, quite a few brand advertisg like, Toyo, GT Radial and Kumho. Dont koe hw r the review...

i am running the same setup as yours..

to solve the sluggish issue, i would recommend:

volker spec II + R2D ignition upgrade (can experience strong pulling immediately)
torco SR5 engine oil (improve engine lubrication)
lighter rims + lighter tyres (using 18" OZ ultraleggerra + F1 Asym now)
