Aircon Compressor: what is its lifetime?

just wanted to know anyone know the life time of an aircon compressor. Mine is a E46/1999 and it seemed that my aircon compressor is dying on me liao! :furious:
what should be the price of a new aircon compressor and how much will it cost to have a new one installed?

I have also noted that my Fuel Consumption (FC) is also increasing....could this be due to the weak aircon compressor that the engine has to work harder?

any comments are more than welcomed!

If you have a sanyo denso compressor, that thingy will last as long as your engine. The most common wear and tear item would be your compressor pulley, to be precise, the pulley bearing. The bearing is a sealed unit and most air-con tech does not want to change them for you. Reason being it is a little tricky and the bearings are not easily available. I think there are shops specialises in bearings and they may just have the correct size. How much would one pay for a bearing replacement? 2 hours to strip the compressor pulley, then the bearing (very gingerly) and whack a new one in place. After that, fix up your compressor and re-charge the refridgerants and test the unit.

my e46 aircon compressor died 1 month after warranty ended.... so 3 yr 1 mth... fixed it outside for about 1k, PML quoted me more than double... of course they did say the final figure depends on what had to be replaced....

I just changed my compressor under warranty after 1.5 years. It still blew cool air but was making noise ( whinning ). Mine is a E65.

Hi all,

If compressor needs to be replaced, then just look for a re-con one will do. Probably could save you half of the price.

re-new your air cond 'oil' every 3 years, this is my best advice from one of my workshop.
