Alternator for E90

Hi guys...

Recently fixed a bunch of problems on my E90.. Valve seals, valve cover gasket, AT solenoids, door lock, and a bunch of stuff. Barely back to happily driving and the alternator failing sign pops up.

Had it double confirmed by BMW emergency services as I thought it was a drained battery at first but turns out the battery is still fine (for now) and instead it's the alternator that's giving up the ghost. About time- 137k mileage after all.

However, the car only has about 2 years or lesser left on its COE and I'm not sure if its worth to change to a new alternator or just go for a recon one. In fact, I don't know where to find a recon one and if it's safe to go with that. Would appreciate any advice!

Go and ask propel if got second hand one ..... The site sponsors should also be able to help you source for a recon one ....

Do check for brand new prices with the stockists as well, eng soon and integrated global as sometimes they can surprise you

So far ive checked with Eng Soon, its about 300 including gst. Lowest workshop quote I got was 482 including parts(new) and labor amd gst. Highest was 900. Doing in jb labor cost is 150RM. Will be getting it done at a local ws tmr I guess. The E90 certainly does not age gracefully.

482 for new alternator is very cheap already! E90 is prone to heavy wear and tear, as well as repair bills but the drive is - priceless!

Thanks! I was really afraid it would cost another bomb like the other repairs (2k with parts from stockist and labor in JB).. so 482 is quite ok i guess. Will see how it goes tmr! thanks!

Got check with WS is there such thing as send your alternator for servicing ?

I used to do this during my army days ...... Take apart the alternature then clean the parts .......

I used to do this during my army days ...... Take apart the alternature then clean the parts .......

I think it cannot be serviced. But if the voltage regulator uplorry, i think can change that part only.

Anyway, alternator usually last about 100k km.

The regulator is a good point .....
