Well, the word "best car in the world" is over rated because another will become best, then another will become the best, then another

No Offence. Chill :)

Re: anybody jumping over to the new s class

Re: anybody jumping over to the new s class

the best car in the world is my own car, even if its a COE Datsun 120Y

Re: anybody jumping over to the new s class

More importantly, how is the FC? How long warranty?

Re: anybody jumping over to the new s class

An article on 2nd May 2011 on one of the best cars in the World (thus the word 'the best cars in the world is over-rated)...

Article itself (damn long man)
I used to be an ardent fan and supporter of the Mercedes Benz brand.
Believing that I bought one of the best cars in the World, I first purchased an E320

Mercedes Benz 1
After three years with my E 320, the air conditioner started working intermittently,
leaving you at times on the long road without air conditioning.
Mercedes Benz was unable to resolve the problem.
I eventually had to sell the car, as it was unbearable to drive without air-conditioning in a dessert climate.
So I bought another E 320.

Mercedes Benz 2
What a terrible car.
Driving at 160km/h I suddenly lost control over the steering wheel.
This happened in a corner on the open road.
With all my might I hung onto the steering wheel, and managed to keep the car on the road.
Barely managing from getting us all killed.
I had my wife and baby in the car.
The dashboard alarm was in blood red.
I looked for a safe place to stop the car.
Shortly I found a suitable place and stopped the car.
The engine was boiling when I opened the bonnet to investigate what happened.
The crankshaft pulley has a rubber insert, which disintegrated, and the pulley cut the belts for the power steering and water pump.
The pulley further cut into the sump and timing chain cover, causing oil leaks.
My wife and baby had to sit for the entire day next to the car in the hot sun, while I tried to get support.

At 24h00 that night we finally booked into a hotel.
After three days the car was provisionally repaired.
Needless to say the car was sold.

Mercedes Benz 3
This time I bought an E 240.
This was the best car of the lot.
But once again air conditioner problems.
The evaporator gave problems and had to be replaced.
And rust.
The roof started rusting where the sunroof was fitted.
So eventually the car was sold and E 500 purchased.

Mercedes Benz 4
The E500 was just as crap.
Randomly the engine starting cutting out, and the car was getting slower and slower,
until I had to stop.
Of course once again in the dessert.
The car was collected and taken to the Mercedes Benz workshops.
Three days later it was returned, unrepaired.
They could not find the fault!!!
To cut a long story short, the problem remained and I sold the car.
Now I bought an E55 AMG

Mercedes Benz 5
The E55 AMG was a great car, until the warranty expired.
23 000km out of warranty the right front shock absorber collapsed.
Once again in the dessert.
What to do?
Since there is no support anywhere close, I had to drive the car like that for 1500km to get it repaired.
This is a very expensive breakdown, since the car has a pneumatic suspension.
I requested financial assistance from Mercedes Benz.
This was denied.

The E55 AMG is already booked into the workshop for the next repair.
The exhaust is leaking at the manifold somewhere.
But I have to wait 11 days for repair to be effected.
The workshop is full.
Probably all broken Mercedes Benzes.
So once again the E55 AMG is standing for close to two weeks.
I have to use my trusted Land Cruiser to get me around.
This is just a great car.

The E55 AMG is a very expensive car, costing approximately One Million Rand.
Such a car should not have such expensive breakdowns just out of warranty.
But that is how they make them nowadays.
Just good enough to last 120 000km.
Then it is out of warranty, and you sit with the problems.
So what?
Just buy a new one.

Recently, after a service, the car was returned to me with steel protruding from the front tyres.
The cause was wrong wheel alignment.
This was observed by the workshop, but not reported to me.
They did not even bother to correct the wheel alignment.
The car was delivered to me in good order, or so I thought.

Isn’t that what you expect from Mercedes Benz after a service?
To get your car returned to you in good order, and safe?
That is why you pay Mercedes Benz these Rip-Off service prices.

I can just thank the stars that I did not have a (fatal) accident.
Could have killed some innocent people too. (Horror!)

I only discovered this when the front tyres started losing pressure.
A slow puncture I thought.
What a horrible surprise I got when the tyres where removed.

Mercedes Benz Management
I took the matter further.
With regards to the worn tyres, Mercedes Benz just shrugged this off.
They did not care.
At least they offered to do the wheel alignment for free.

Since I am a loyal Mercedes Benz customer, I expected some sort of assistance with the damaged pneumatic shock absorber.
I thus wrote an e-mail to the Regional MD. Mr. Gavin Mc Allister, requesting assistance.
Mr. Gavin Mc Allister did not even bother to talk to me.
He escalated the matter down to floor level.
Nice.
I thus approached Customer Service in Johannesburg.
Same story.
I only got to experience the arrogant and hard-assed attitude of Mercedes Benz management.
After three days, and many calls from my side, did Lance Mooney, manager customer complaints, bother to call me back.
He is a very busy man, you know.
I was obviously just a nuisance to him.
He informed me that I will not be granted any assistance.
Lance Mooney further informed me that they do have a department to assist customers in special cases, but that I did NOT qualify.
Who then qualifies? Family and friends?
He could not tell me.

Every effort on my side was blocked by customer service to escalate the matter further up.
I wanted the contact details of Dr. Niefer, but was refused his contact details.
After all, he has ((in) competent?) managers to deal with such trivial matters as customer complaints.
Who the Hell does the customer think he is anyway?
Just a bloody nuisance!
We just have to pay and get lost.

Management is toooo busy with managing the company. How great.
We are in good hands.

I had to pay the Rip-Off price for the repair, and no assistance was granted.
My opinion of Mercedes Benz Management?
They are all self-centered, not even remotely prepared to assist.
Just too good to talk to a customer!!!
I have some stronger words, but will spare you these.

Tips when going on the long road with a Mercedes Benz
Pack overnight camping gear.
Pack enough food to last you 2 – 3 days
Pack firewood
Blitz and a good lighter
Some meat
Don’t forget the braaigrid
Beer is also important!
A chair to sit in
An umbrella
Sun Block, factor 50. The sun can be mean.
A few good books to read
If you have space, a tent to sleep in. Otherwise you will have to sleep in the car
A mattress
Anti-Mosquito
A good first aid kit
A solar panel, should the car battery go flat
Gas cooker
Gas light
Ice box and Ice

Maybe an amateur radio and antenna, should you be in an area where there is no signal.

Something for self-defense, as you never know where your trusted Mercedes Benz will break down.

It would be better to have one of those Mercedes Benz tow bars fitted. They are really nice.
Not like the aftermarket tow bars.
You can kit out a camping trailer, and tow it behind you when you leave on your business trip.
That way you don’t have to pack all your gear into the Mercedes.
Just imagine the envy of passing motorists, when you stand next to the road in your broken down Mercedes Benz, bonnet open, but fully organized for at least a week.
The Toyotas, VW Golfs, UNO’s Old Kombis, Nissan’s all drive past you, looking at you in envy, where you stand in front of your broken down Mercedes Benz, bonnet open, foot in the grill, (there is a special place in the grill to rest your foot, just a slight kick will do) beer in hand, looking very happy.
After all, you planned ahead!
Isn’t that what you’d expect from Mercedes Benz?
Hell, we can even start a franchise business, selling all this great gear with every Mercedes Benz sold.
That will give customers a lot of confidence.
After all, now they are really organized.

Some advice
It is good advice to have a Toyota on standby when your Mercedes Benz is broken down.
My Toyota’s (Land Cruiser’s – 3 off) have NEVER let me down.
Not even in the deepest dessert, where the going is very tough.

The future
Look out for a black Mercedes Benz, E55 AMG fitted with great signwriting.
Beautiful signs on each door.
This sign writing will feature the main points above.
You should be able to spot the car for an entire day at various Mercedes Benz dealerships.
For that day I will use my trusted Land Cruiser to drive me around.
Perhaps I could also leave the car for a day at a time at some BMW dealerships.
Right at the front door.
Press is invited!
