*the SWB version looks damn good tho*

For now here’s the thing. In 1980 something called Audi Quattro hit the rally scene. Three years later the series-produced Sport Quattro came to be and featured as the most powerful “mass” production car in Germany. Using a 2.1-litre engine the car was good for 225kW (306 bhp) and was the star of the Frankfurt Motor Show at its unveiling.

At the 20th Techno Classica in Essen, Germany (from 26 to 30 March 2008) the Audi Sport quattro will be presented as a showpiece. More than that, Audi Tradition will have the Audi Sport quattro Group B rally car, one of five remaining in the world. The cars, based on the shortened Ur-quattro car, were sold for 200,000 German marks each and the remaining are said to be worth close to that even today. How much is a German mark these days again? Special 1:43 scale model car of the year examples will be on sale at the show. These are also limited in number to 333.

Hey Mock

I've seen some authentic Sport Quattros as well as some very good replicas made from regular Ur-quattros at a few of the Ur-quattro specialists whom I have visited in the UK over the years. The Sport Quattro is much closer in size to the Lancia Delta Integrale then the regular Ur-quattro, more chuckable and agile. But sadly all LHD.

For those who are interested in reading more on the Ur-quattro, as I have mentioned on the VAG forum, for some reason, there are a bunch of UK magazines on newsstands now that have cover stories or articles on the car:
- Octane Issue 57, March 2008
- Performance Car Issue 1, March 2008: no relation to 1980s/ 1990s magazine of same name but not a bad read at all
- Practical Performance Car Issue 46, February 2008
- CAR magazine Issue 548, April 2008 - supplement on "Dream Cars for Empty Pockets" (although I wouldn't advise anyone with empty pockets to run an Ur-quattro)
- UK's Classic and Sport Car May 2008, on sale 3 April in the UK - cover story on the Ur-quattro, featuring three different generations of the regular wheel base road car, one rally car and a Sport Quattro

Happy reading!

I know the sport quattro was a sporting legend in its own time, but there's something about the look of the car that doesn't seem quite right. It's as if someone grabbed a regular ur quattro, cut out a chunk in the middle with a bread knife, and sandwiched the remaining halves afterwards. Not an elegant description, but I can't think of anything better.

Here's a link to an article on the sport quattro in the "Fourtitude" website. Be sure to check out the photo of the car's back seat. Its a joke ....

Yup, it's quite a strange looking car in the flesh, which I personally think hasn't aged as well as the regular Ur-quattro. The back seats are even funnier when you see them up close -- there is really no space at all between the back of the front seats and the rear bench -- not even for kids' legs.

Still, 306 bhp and a shortened wheelbase would be a revelation, even if it's only available in LHD. The Ur-quattro feels a bit too long as it is, and extra power is always nice!
