BMW Badge Whores

Seen several postings of self declaration of being a badge whore. :D

What does it mean to be one? Do or die oso BMW? Rather be poor and sad but rather cry in a BMW? What isit about the brand that attracts you?

I am not fully convinced i am one yet. Maybe needs time. :D Frankly, i bought one because of the X1, how it looks, the drive and the space. I also like the classic BMWs like the 2002 and isetta.

I have many friends who have been die hards for different reasons; the straight 6, the rear wheel drive, driftability or the legendary handling. The UDM spirit is very alive there!

With the withdrawal of BMW from F1 and expansion of campaigns towards lifestyle (joy, ultimate drive), seems that there will be more such badge whores owners; those wanting to be seen and be seen with. Are the campaigns that effective? Find yourself buying more BMW merchandise?? :D

p.s. Indirectly, this has caused many first time car owners attracted fatally to the brand and we will definitely see more basic general motoring questions like what is my fc? Which fuel should i use? Etc. Perhaps the admin may want to consider a general motoring section so that we dun have to respond on each model specific section?

IMO, a BMW is an optimal combination of many variables. Badge, handling, driving feel, perceived status and perceived yuppie lifestyle and image. It will score high on many parameters, but a non-M BMW is still just a very good average consumer daily drive. Many aspects of the ride have been used to justify the brand bias, and it is easy to tell. For instance, to say that its handling aspect is unparallel is a reflection of the inherent marque bias, unless the owner has driven it on track versus the cars with much better handling. So yes, its handling is good relative to Merc and perhaps Audi, but it is merely a scaled 7.5 in relation to the 9.0 for some Japanese cars, figuratively speaking. And for those who have driven a Porsche or a Evo/STI, you know what handling means.

Hence, if a BMW owner tells me he buys the ride for the handling but does not know how to compare that specific aspect to the likes of a Evo or a Rex, or that the M3 is "better" than the GTR, I will know that he is actually comparing on a composite of parameters, not on one variable alone. No doubt, it is a relevant but nevertheless skewed comparison.

We all have heard comments like "BMW sart" and "wow, BMW" merely to connote a perceived status. But our justifications of its handling aspects is on a narrow basis limited only to the continental marques, and that limitation alone construed an inherent brand bias.

So, GTR vs M3, you tell me your basis of comparison.

I think many newbies buy the car for the ostentatious reasons, myself included some 8 years ago. Having said that, all of us will progress and will realise that there are merits and flaws of the marque. Admittedly, it will reach a point where the merits will no longer be a stronghold in comparison to other marques or that the budget will not allow for better models within the bracket. If it reaches that point and one still holds the view about BMW being the ultimate driving machine, then you could say that the badge is grasping the emotions of the owner so well that he or she has a perspective so myopic, conversations could only occur to similar fanboys. That, in itself, epitomises badge whoring.

Re: BMW Badge Whores

I always like your IMOs, kenntona. Thanks.

I agree that there isnt really an ultimate or perfect car. BMWs are definitely not it.... an only fan boys say that loudly until they get hit with problems they cant solve... where they will say Wow, BMW and BMW sart. Outside of singapore (due to high COE) many throw life savings to resuscitate old non-iconic rust bucket bimmers well past their functionality dates to keep the badge and be able to say to their friends they drive BMW. They could be spending more time on productive work and with their families instead. But no....

Oh yeah, I forgot. A typical trait of a fanboy is to equate marque ownership with quality of opinions.

You own a BMW, therefore you should know more on cars, and hence can say more.

It has to be that way.

I confess, i am BMW Fanboy.

Up to maybe E39/E46, it was the leading the pack in term of sports sedan. I especially like the manly steering feel.

After Chris Bangle comes on board, it sought of lost its core focus. The competitor has catch up.

With the current TC IL4 + EPS, it no longer exciting for fanboy.

My next car might be Mini Cooper S.
