This has been bugging me ever since I bought my car, second-hand. Is the wire that connects to the sound system loose? GPS is working well and outputting sound when I put it on battery power, but no sound from the speakers once it is in the dock.

Anyone else has the same issue can share share?

If you are referring to no sound from the door speakers, you could remove the door side panel and check for a loose/detached speaker connection, that happened to me tho mine was not a GPS sound issue.

all other inputs are working but not the garmin, i really wonder if it is some cable loose in the connection. For example , when a phonecall comes in the HU goes into phone mode but no sound from speaker. haiz.

I am also facing the same problem and I need to dismount the Garmin from the cradle and slot it back for it to function properly again.

I had the same issue on my E90. The problem was narrowed down to the cradle or the connection point on the Garmin unit itself. Since car was under warranty PML replaced the Garmin unit and cradle together. No problems since.

I will go clean the contacts and report back.

Fat hope that it is as simple as that. Lol

no, no sound from speakers at all. when the phone call comes in or the GPS is giving directions, I will hear nothing, and then my radio or cd player will come back on. so it seems like a cable is disconnected somewhere.

if phone call in, mine can only be answer via the touch screen, those button from the steering wheel don't work. and my gps voice sound like robot too lol

The portable GPS unit is connected via the cradle to the HU via a few cables. in addition, the GPS unit needs to be coded to the car with a VO in order for the HU to be able to pick up the navigation/voice data from the GPS when needed. But since you mentioned that the HU will attempt to mute the radio/CD it means the coding is done properly already.

My suggestion is that you try to clean the connector pads on the GPS unit itself as well to check and make sure that the pins on the cradle are straight and none are broken. The first few pins on the left side of the cradle (and corresponding connections on the GPS unit) controls the voice data connection to the HU. 1 poor or broken connection can cause the problem you are facing.

One easy way to solve the problem is to tape up the first 4 or 5 pins on the GPS unit itself using a piece of duct tape. This will prevent the GPS unit from detecting the connection to the cradle and continue to project the sound through it's own speaker(s). However as not all the pins are blocked, the charging of the GPS will will be as per normal.

This is what I did after I did my bluetooth phone retrofit as removing the coding of the GPS from the car did not solve the problem of the sound output from GPS being muted. I had even removed the wiring from the GPS cradle to the HU but still did not have any sound. My guess is that the GPS will detect the cradle pins and send the sound output through there regardless of whether the pins are actually connected to the HU or not.

the additional parts for bluetooth phone costs less than $100. But portable GPS and original bluetooth phone doesn't work in tandem so cheaper solution for non-iDrive cars is to just provide the portable GPS and use that as the bluetooth phone.
