BMW plant in Malaysia

Here in the US we read in Roundel that BMW will be building a plant in Malaysia to build 3 series cars.
My hope is that will make it less expensive for you folks to buy 3 series cars.
Is that how you think it will effect prices? I can't believe how expensive they are for you folks...
All the Best,

Re: BMW plant in Malaysia

care to link us to the article?
have not read anything about a plant in Malaysia...I suppose it could be just an assembly plant...which they are already doing for the 3 and 5 Series...not very impressed with the quality I must say...would rather pay more to have my bimmer imported...
don't think prices will come down anytime soon till Asean Free Trade Agreement has been in place for a few years...even then not very optimistic still...maintanence (road tax, electronic road pricing zzz) would surely rise...

Rats. Sorry to hear M'asian cars are only for that country.
Being poor, it just kills me that you folks have to pay that much for cars! My Scottish blood coming thru, don't you see.

Re: BMW plant in Malaysia

If I am not wrong Malaysia has CKD 3 series and 5 series just as there is CKD's 3 series in Indonesia.

FYI, CKD = completely knock down, means assembly is done in the country where the car is sold, thus could have same concept as IKEA, better shipping and packaging, not to mention less tax on parts. CKD vehicles should cost 20-30% cheaper, I think from what I remember for 3 series prices in Jakarta.

Re: BMW plant in Malaysia

The price of cars in Singapore is trully atrocious compare to many other countries. Especially BMW, it's unbelieveable how much profit margin the dealer (PML) set for themself ........... and the irony is that it's still selling like hot cakes here.

Re: BMW plant in Malaysia

yeap, my understanding is also that Malaysia Assembled BMWs are to be sold in Malaysia only. We have some Malaysian forummers here who can shed further light. BMWs arent cheap by their standards either.

For those overseas readers who dont already know, the key reasons for a pricey bimmer in SG is due to:
- COE (which last only 10 years.....Fork!)
- high import taxes (main reason)...(Fork x2)
- monopoly of distributor-ship (Fork x 3), until only very recently being challenged slightly by parallel importers

I Basically-Must-Work very hard to earn my $$ to own my B-M-Ws Because-My-Wife likes it

Re: BMW plant in Malaysia

Here are the price:
320 RM232,800
320SE RM249,800
325RM RM288,800

Above price included 1yr road tax. For your information, BMW Malaysia is the only distributor. Celling price is controlled by them. Therefore, the price can only go down and not up.

In Singapore, i am not sure why nobody calculate effective tax on car. Based on my calculation, our effective tax is 80% (ARF - PARF + Custom Duty + GST).
