BMW Asks Suppliers to Cut Their Prices, Manager Magazin Reports
2008-01-23 12:41 (New York)

By Nadja Brandt
Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world's largest maker of luxury cars, is asking suppliers to cut their prices, Manager Magazin reported. BMW, which seeks cuts of as much as 20 percent for some parts, is trying to decrease costs, the magazine said, citing head of purchasing Herbert Diess.

The automaker has said it plans to slash jobs as part of the initiative. Part-time workers in BMW's German factories, in particular, will be affected, as well as employees at headquarters and in the development division, the magazine said, citing personnel chief Ernst Baumann.

I guess cutting cost is to make them more competitive. To compromise with the quality is unlikely their policy.

To be very honest, I found that my e46 exhibited much better quality interms of materials used. Even more so, the doors were heavier and it was so much more of a pleasure just to hear the 'thud' when you closed the door. My 2 cents.

part of the pain of growing bigger and bigger and the pressure to sell more ....

Toyota handles this well because they have a HUGE economies of scale to make Lexus costing competitive, and yet sell at same price as BMW (in the open market)

But BMW don't have Corollas to sell... there is only 1 way, either BMW sacrifice something or supplier die.

Im in the automotive supplies industry for the past 10yrs, this is not new. Car manufacturers demand for cost reduction in their components even every quarter!

Read a lot about the N52 engine idling/vibration/noise problems in overseas forums.
