On the morning of 23rd of July, some 40 members of the BMW.SG Community made their way to Performance Motors to attend a 3-hour-long technical talk hosted by BMW technical advisors.

The members were treated to some coffee and other light refreshments before being ushered into a theaterette where they were greeted by the very enthusiastic Mr. Robert Friend, and his technical advisors, David and Sean. The talk began with an introductory speech delivered by Robert on the new advancements and progress of BMW throughout the years, and how technology has played a major role in engineering BMWs as the “Ultimate Driving Machines” on the roads.

Sean carried on the presentation with a technical slideshow showcasing the differences in aesthetics that the new 3 Series (codenamed the E90), 5 Series (E60), and 7 Series models now bear in comparison to its predecessors. Some of the members who have been driving the current and previous generations were given a real visual treat and a much deeper understanding on how and why the design and technical aspects have changed the appearance, stance and performance of the BMW models throughout the years. Questions and answers were quickly traded back and forth with regards to these improvements and many lessons were learned by the enthusiasts who had little cue on how much had gone into building the cars. The highlight of the day was a presentation on how the current 6 series cabriolet was conceived and sophisticatedly constructed, which included intricate processes and many grueling tests before production even commenced. Everyone in the training room was especially wowed over with the pin-point laser calibration tool on each model during the construction processes.

After the “theory” session was over, everyone proceeded to the technical room where the current E90 3 Series, 5 Series and a grand dame 7 series were waiting. The cars were filled with the latest BMW innovations such as the CCC (Car Communication Computer), HUD (Heads Up Display) system and navigation (GPS) systems. Members wasted no time into getting into the cars and exploring every option. Several BMW technical advisors were on hand to assist them and tackle several queries, which varied from factory paint jobs and aero kits to engine management systems.

An hour and a half later, trainers and participants alike took a break and proceeded to the lobby where everyone had a great time discussing what they had learnt in the earlier part of the morning over a sumptuous buffet lunch. Several participants took the opportunity to test drive the 645 Cabriolet during this time, no doubt, with a much deeper respect and understanding of the car. The Saturday morning session ended with souvenir-bearing participants who returned home happy and wise.
