Brake Pad and Brake Disc

Hi guys,

need to check a couple of things, hope someone can help.

1) I have been told that my brake pads (Front and Back) are wearing out. And the rear brake disc is wearing out also. The mileage for the car is approximately 38,000 km. Is this a common thing? from my last 10 years of car ownership, this is the first time I come across a need to change brake disc so early.

2) How much would a brake pad and change cost in the workshop outside? Also the cost of changing the brake disc. Just a rough estimate will do.

3) Which workshop will you recommend? I live in the west and work in Town area.

BTW, my service engineer told me, it is cheaper to change outside. And if i swap back the same stuff, they won't know anyway. Quite nice huh?

Thanks in advance for all advice. Appreciate it.

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

38k?! i think its about right la. brake pads confirm up lorry wan. plus he ask u go outside change, dun think he is out to rip u off

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

Thanks... i can understand the brake pad part. But how come Brake disc also can wear out so fast?

I am still on my first set of brakes, This basically means that the metal (brake disc) and the rubber (brake pads) wears out at the same rate?

unsual that disc will wear at the same rate as brake pads. most disc last the lifetime of the ride. be discreet when u change brake pads outside and ask them to see if the discs need changing as well. hear what they have to say.

all the best.

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

For my previous ride, changed my brake pads at an external workshop when OBC prompted, mileage was 44K. Silly me went back to PML to ask them to reset OBC. Their reply : "You changed your pads outside ? Warranty VOID." I said : "Go ahead and void, I have only one month to go before warranty expires anyway" Still must pay $44 to reset OBC.....

Paid $380 for the pads + sensors, heard it cost $700+ at "warranty intact" workshop. Brake disc should not need changing at 38K. Hope this helps.

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

thanks for all your comments.

Well, the OBC says there is still 8000km more to go, but the Service engineer says that it is going to touch the sensor already.

Again, i got a couple more questions.

1) is there any outside workshop that can change the brake and reset the OBC for me?

2) which will be cheaper? should i change before it hit the sensor or after the OBC indicate so?

Thakns again

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

Bro, You can go to R2D at Bukit Batok Unity Centre. Go and find out the telephone and address from the sponsor section.

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

Henry,

I just did mine at Juzz for Cars. They can reset the OBC for u.
But it is really unusual that the disc will wear out at 38k. Mine is 50k already and the discs are still ok.

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

hi Henry,

Very Unusual...

Just went to check if my brake pad is ready for replacement at 38K, pad has another 7k to go and discs will need to change on my next pad changed, another 40K or so

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

I drove down to R2D for a check. He also advise that the disc need to change...

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

hi henry,

what model you driving?
my front disc wear out at about 60k but rear still got some allowance now at 85k.
strange that we have such a different wear rate between front and rear.

Re: Brake Pad and Brake Disc

Hi bro. You might want to check with this guy on the ebc brake pad price as well as the brake hose.
Wilwood. I bought from him the front brake pad at $140.

so if my car is at 3 yrs old (at 47km) and my warranty is up to 5 years with BMW. The service advisor inform me today to change my front disc brake & pad ( at quotation s$1600)... if i change out side ,, will my 5 years warranty be void? some workshop say these are consumable items will not affect warranty....

If you buy from PML, definitely they will have records to show that you did not change pads with them if you do it outside.

As for warranty, not too sure. Some may say that only the brakes, alignment, shocks and those related to the wheels will be void, warranty for engine and others still intact. Some may say its total void. Try asking your Sales guy to see what he/she says.

On average, brakes pads + sensors should cost about $300++ from ES, excluding labour outside of PML.

Brake rotor/disc usually should at least 5 years+, unless you go track and brake hard frequently.
