Brighter Xenons??

why you need so bright?

The original BMW Xenons are 4200K (K=color temperature) , if you want white, you need to get 5000K or 6000K Xenons bulbs. Wattage is all the same.

Hi guys. Need some advise on my Xenons. I recently fitted my F/L E46 with Xenons at PML. However, I have noticed that they are not as white and bright as those on the Lexus and Mercedes. I was told by the CSA that PML imports the lower watt bulbs and that I should look for aftermarket ones to get the desired effect; what a letdown!!!

Can anyone advise me if this is true or are the BMW Xenons like this? If aftermarket ones are the answer, then pls let me know what I should get and where I may get them fitted.

Your advise and opinions will really be appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm... how did he program the car to do that? I think even with Daytime Running Lights you need to start the engine first.

Hi m3magic. Not the brightness that matters. Paid so much for the Xenons and found that others are even whiter - no shiok. Any recommendations as to where I can get them fitted?

Hi TobyNik. Cool, but I don't think this is available in SIN. Anyway the lights really bright.

By others do you mean other makes of cars or??? BMWs standard fitted bi-xenons are less white than the other makes, but I don't think that it is because they want to cheat you or anything... Each manufacturer will decided what to put on their own cars and I guess BMW felt that the bulb they were using for their bi-xenons were white enough. Just my 2 cents worth...

Hi,

If you want lexus white or MB white, you need to get the original Philips D2S Xenon from Tye Soon (waterloo st), selling $220 each for 6000K.

They really look nice with a little blueish tone in it. You can check it out with Foo on his 530i.

Mine is a little greenish tone Xenon bulb aftermarket type, cost about $85 each but not as bright as those from Philips, their light intensity is high.

hope this help.

Hi mracer77. No, I am not saying they cheated me; just that I don't feel shiok having to pay extra for something not as nice. It was probably done this way so that PML could get their retrofitted xenons approved by LTA.

Hi stevenwu. Any idea whether we can fit these bulbs ourselves or should we go to someone qualified. I am told that it is so much more complicated to fit than normal bulbs.

Hi,

Not true, just remember of 4 screws for each headlight unit and there you go.

You could DIY.......Too ex for me ($220 each) but believe me, they are veru nice and neat, very light blueish tone with super white light, similar to the new MB xenon light.

If you want to, I will be happy to help, ofcause have to wait for my return from State next week.

:)

TX, Just for this discussion, there is a reason why BMW original Xenons are 4200K instead of those “pure” or “super” white 5000-6000K; at 4200K, the Xenons carries a bit of yellowish tone, this actually help extends the distance of light beam throw, that is, it can shine further; yellowish light can also cut through fog better especially at night driving under slight haze or foggy conditions. Remember those yellow fog lights that some 4x4 and many Msia cars have on?

Going for “pure” white, yes, will give you a garang look, nice and some even feel stylish, but it’s not as functional; so, just be aware of these facts when you make your decision; and no, BMW did not cheat anyone who got Xenons with 4200K bulbs;

BTW, I gone one full circle from 4200 to 6000 back to 4200. :)

Hi m3magic. Thanks for the advise. Think I'll just stick with what I have then, because I travel to M'sia quite a fair bit.

By the way, as I have mentioned before, I am not implying that PML cheated me. I don't know why you thought I felt cheated and kept posting that remark in all your replies. Maybe by saying I don't feel shiok implied that? What I really mean is that I don't feel shiok when comparing with the merc & lexus. Hope I got this thing about feeling cheated sorted out once and for all.

My apologies than. Hope all is cool. Happy driving! :)

Hi M3Magic,

Yes. Regarding the Philips bulb that I am talking about, then you have the color and intensity both. The lumen is slightly lower than 4200K color temp.

I am always doubt on those bulbs that we had bought (~$85), their lumen is very low indeed.

Check out Foo 530i, although his is 6000K, his intensity is high (brighter) when compared to mine, ofcause his is talking about 2.5x more expensive than mine in term of cost.

:)

My apologies!! I guess the word nice is very subjective... I kinda like the standard BMW xenons... my opinion only...

hi, i bought a pair of bulbs from Frankfurt Auto last yr.
it's a bit greenish... but i think it oso has D2S imprinted on the cover... but it costs only $90 each..
so tt means it's not the original one? diff from the Philip D2S?

hi,

D2S is one of the type of Xenon bulb that projector headlight unit will use.
D2R is used mainly for reflective headlight, eg Lexus type.

As not as there is No Philips or Osram imprinted on the bulb, they are after-market bulb, non OEM.

The light intensity is not spec so ofcause do not expect too much on them.

Hope this clear thing up.

Cheers
