Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

Dear all, unfortunately, I found out that my newly collected E87 got scratched by a Shell pump operator just now. The scratch is about 4cm long and quite obvious (white strip near the gasoline cap)...I only noticed it after i returned home..called the petrol station and they are checking the CCTVs and will get back to me tomorrow... if it is really their fault, what should i ask for compensation?

anyways....

I heard there is touch up paint which we can use to remove the scratch? I did a search on google and find the followings. According to the below, where I can find the items? many thanks for ur kind help!!

1600-grit sandpaper (ultra-fine grain)
Toothpick or thin artist's brush
BMW touch up paint (maybe PML has?about $15?)
BMW clear coat (what is this? Does PML sell?)

Step 1
Clean the chipped area free of any debris. Use moistened sandpaper on the edges of the chipped area just enough to make it smooth without adding scratches. Clean and dry the area again after sanding.

Step 2
Apply the touch up paint with a toothpick with the tip broken off or a small, very thin, soft artist's brush. Avoid using the brush that is provided with the paint kit. Allow a tiny amount of paint to smoothly adhere to the toothpick or the brush. If too much paint coats the toothpick or brush, gently clean it off and try again. Apply the paint by tapping it lightly in the center of the chip and letting it "run" to the edges, filling in the chip. It is important that you do not try to actually brush or stroke the paint onto the chip. Less is more, because many layers of paint will be needed to create an invisible repair.

Step 3
Allow the paint to dry according to the label's instructions.

Step 4
Repeat Steps 1 to 5 eight to 10 times for an optimal result.

Step 5
Use ultra-fine,1600-grit sandpaper to gently smooth over the entire repaired surface where the chip used to be. Wet the sandpaper and sand as lightly as possible until the surface of the repair is completely flat and smooth. Finish by adding a layer of the clear coat from the kit, allowing the top coat to dry thoroughly, and applying car wax (if desired).

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

sorry to hear bout that bro.

as tempting as those insturctions sound it shld not be carried out by a layman. seriously depending on the seriousness of the scratch, some might be able to remedy by getting a good groomer to poilish off. if its too serious, even touch ups will not give u that flawless look. have to send for sanding and respray.

i am doubtful if the station is able to determine anything from the footage due to the priximity of the camera. sometimes it may be a gentle brush of the stuff they hang around their belt whilst walking pass ur vehicle. not noticible on CCTV.

it will be good if u can post pics so that its easier to ascertain the seriousness of the scratch.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

saddened to hear that these over zealous pump guys did the same to another beautiful car.
last time someone other than myself filled gas in my rides was 12yrs ago when the last scratch and even occasional petrol spill happened.
after that, never again did i trusted anyone than myself to personally filled her up.
maybe you could consider this hence.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

yeah. if possible do it urself. else if ur lazy like me, make sure u stand there and watch them pump. in event they cause a scratch, u r there to witness. i know it sounds anal, but what choice do you have? i encountered attendents who rest their hands on my rear spoiler and i do make it a point to tell them gently not to do it

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

Sorry to hear that.. Anyway, if you got no experience in this method, please don't try it.
Just use a light polish to rub first, if can remove or minimise then let it be. If is too deep and the result is not satisfying then use tooth pick to slowly fill in the gap, wait for it to dry, den use light polish to rub and blend the area. Ignore the clearcoat part unless you want to do sanding. 1600grit sandpaper is aggressive and the mark won't be easy to remove without the correct tools.

it is a guy's instinct to poke a hole...how come he can poke wrongly???

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

I guess it should be the guy's fault by swinging the nozzle or whatevers..my wife was sitting inside the car and she heard some knocking sound when the guy was operating..

btw, if i go back to PML workshop, will they do it for me? how much is the damage?

thanks all for your kind words =) feel like a family here, hehe

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

if the scratch not too deep, go ask for some touch up paint from PML (FOC), bring it to a good groomer and he will touch up the scratch and then buff it down. it is better than sending for re-spray.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

Sorry to hear about that. I experienced attendant accidentally broke my petrol cap connector and worse still did'nt know which one (as I discovered it probably months later).

Do not try out those instructions you metnioned as it would do further damage to your car. I suppose the scratch may not be too serious, unless your attendant deliberately inflicted those. Try using product like Scratch X , that may help to solve your problem.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

Sigh....sad news Bro. Get it resprayed or repaired by the professionals. It's a bimmer, not a hafei. It might cost you a bit but you'll sleep better at night.

Sorry to hear that bro. My previous ride was full of scratches from the finger nails of the pump attendants.

So I am going to heed the advices of e46monster and Slater from now onwards:

If young girl, you would have call him right? Lao Di Go.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

My advice is not to do the steps if u'r in-experience DIY person/groomer. It will still look damaged if u'r a perfectionist aka anal owner. I know cos i'm one.... Jus get it resprayed IMHO.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

There's nothing wrong with the instructions, you can always try to DIY if you have the time. You can always send it to the professionals if you don't like the result. Nothing to lose and you can gain some experience.

I've never let the petrol attendant touch my car...it's a habit I picked up from my dad.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

yup i never let them touch the car, because some do not know what they are doing (even though there may also be good, responsible lao jiaos around too), so as a precaution i dont let anyone touch.

I've heard stories (from one of the members here, sadly) where his car's radiator was filled up with engine oil, if i recalled correctly.

There was once, i went against my own principles, when the friendly attendant insisted very strongly to help me pump air, and i handed the air pump over to him, he unscrewed my BBS rim cap, and promptly dropped it into the darkness. He spent the next 15 mins looking for it.

As for the petrol cap connector, it usually breaks off on its own, as it is usually made of soft rubber or plastic, and when coiled up inside the recess when the flap is closed, usually come into contact with the remnant petrol left by minor spillage in your petrol cap compartment. Over many months or years, they will get corroded and break off. EVERY SINGLE one of my cars, over the years, had broken off slowly. Which may make it easy for the attendants to snap off unwittingly too.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

I nv let petrol attendant touch my car... Same theory.. Will u let some stranger touch ur wife or daughter?

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

dun attempt to repair yourself. wet sanding etc requires lots of skills or else you will make the scratch worse. send to a pro and see what he says.

i wudnt let anyone pump petrol either, or "wipe ur windscreen for you?". for Shell, they wear those gardening gloves and rest their palms on ur paintwork, its a recipe for disaster. and should they spill any petrol on your paintwork, they use those gardening cans to rinse and they find it acceptable to leave water all around your paintwork. i'd rather pump myself and save all the trouble.

Re: Car Scratched by Shell pump dude

Happened to me before, for now the scratch is on the fuel cap door....
