Just want to give all E46 M3 owners a heads up.
Do check your SMG reservoir and High Pressure Power steering hose periodically.
Recently sold my E46 M3 in Australia. A basic mechanical check reviewed that the SMG Feed pipe was leaking SMG hydraulic fluid (Pentosin CHF 11S ?). Reservoir was close to, if not completely empty.
Did a bit of search and found out these 2 hoses are infamous for leaking regardless of age. My car is 2004 and only done 46,000km before handing over. The SMG feed pipe is quite easy for DIY..
SMG feed pipe is relatively cheap. Only $35aud via stealerships. The High Pressure Powersteering hose however was well over $600 delivered. I suggest you get them from US. Alternative solution is to reclamp the hose.
Both leaks will not be noticeable on garage floor due to undertray collecting any leaks. There will not be any warnings on dash either.
I highly recommend owners spend a few minutes to inspect the SMG and HP PS hose. SMG pump replacement is a very expensive exercise.
