Changing Brake disks

Hi Guys,
went to have my brake pads replaced on my e46 cause warning lite came on.The service adviser said have to replace the brake disks as well and all 4 brakes disks and pads costs $1088.
My question is how come only after 2 and the half years and 40,000 km with normal driving the brake disks have to be replaced.Is this the normal wear and tear? cause my previous 3 series did not have to replace brake disks after 3 years? Anyone here have the problem?

Re: Changing Brake disks

i just changed my brake disc too. But my milage was 80,000+km. I did it at Juzz for cars at AROUND 35% cheaper compared to pml. I believe at 40,000km prob need to change pads. It all actually really depends on how bad the wear is. So the best thing to do is to drive down to some other workshop and let them check and get their opinion.

well here goes again...check out e brake stuff cost...

Re: Changing Brake disks

broke pilotsnoopy's bill out for the brake job only...

Front Pads = 117.75
Rear Pads = 142.98
Sensors = 44.60
Brake Fluid Dot 4.0 = 15.31
Labour = 187.00
Total after GST = 533.02

Re: Changing Brake disks

a little OT here...may I ask...our warranty is 3 years? 1st year by BMW, and last 2 years by PML?

Should be 1st and 2nd year by BMW and 3rd year by PML.

Therefore, if you car is above 2 years old. Those wear and tear items best go outside workshop.

Re: Changing Brake disks

Well, the so-alled rule of thumb is that for every 2-3 times u change ur brake pads, you change the brake discs. The CSA would be able to advise u on the thickness of the discs and if there is a need to change. I would rather get them changed outside PML if you intend to fit back stock discs/pads as the parts & labour can be much cheaper.

Check out the usual workshops that we frequent if you do change them outside.

Cheers!

Re: Changing Brake disks

My car has about 33000 km and I've changed the front brake pads twice, the rear brake pads once and the rear discs themselves once. Never had a car where I've had to spend so much on brakes ...

wah... i am going to hit 40k km and have still not changed my pads and discs... hope i am not doing the flintstones thingy when braking... :)

however, so frequent change??? seems excessive...

Re: Changing Brake disks

Its down to the driver and his/her driving style. I've changed my brake pads many times and changed my brake discs 2x (front) & 2x (rear). Last damage was my front federo brake pads. Set me back S$700+.... ouch.

Re: Changing Brake disks

my car had squealling noise around 10K when braking to a stop,got advice from service advisor that there is too much brake dust.He reconmend to drive on the highway and do some harder braking to dislodge the brake dust.Provided no car around.My take is this is a bunch of crap,never ever experience this problem in any of the cars I own before.
