Disabling mirror tilt on E46 during reversing

Hi folks,

Just got myself an E46 last week and while the automatic mirror tilt on the passenger side was cool, I am more comfortable if this feature can be disabled.

I've read the manual and it says to slide the mirror adjustment switch to the passenger mirror and the reverse tilt will be disabled, but I've done that and it still tilts.

Made a call to the sales person at Sime Darby Centre and he too couldn't figure out why except to offer the suggestion that the previous owner may have 'hard coded' the mirror tilt such that it can only be reset via a software reset. (read: pay $ to PML to fix it)

I'm just hoping to hear from other owners with similar problems.... otherwise, I guess I've got to get used to the tilt. :)

Thanks in advance!

when are you adjusting the swicth? turn it to the opposite side when the ignition is off. I know with mine, it was like that too, then one day it had a brain freeze and worked

Re: Disabling mirror tilt on E46 during reversing

if disabling it doesnt work, u can always set the reverse mirror tilt to be around the same level as the angle u would have it when driving forwards.

ok there is probably an easier way, but anyhooo this is the way i do mine and it seems to work, so i cant be bothered with trying anything else..

- put your car in "P"
- make sure your mirror switch is on the left (ie passenger side)
- ok, now this is when u adjust your mirror when u r driving as per normal (not in reverse). adjust to your hearts content, then press the red memory key and either 1,2, or 3. now thats set.
- step on your brake, put your car in reverse. now i assume your passenger side mirror should tilt downwards right? since your mirror switch is already on the passenger side, just adjust the passenger mirror as much as you want to face anywhere you want when u are in reverse gear.
- once u r done, press the red memory key and the same number u pressed earlier (ie if u pressed 1 earlier, press 1 now)
- this should set your mirror tilt when u put your car in reverse gear.

ok to test this.. just put your car back in P gear. your mirror should tilt back to the original driving position. put your car in reverse gear and it should tilt down as much as u had set it.

u can do the same for different car seat positions too.. ie if u are cruising and wanna drive seated lower down, u can set the lower car seat position and save it to memory 2. then adjust the mirrors whilst going forward and reverse to memory 2 as well.

lol i have 3 diferent settings..

hi. congrats on ur new ride!

mine works veri simply:
once gear put into reverse:
- if switch is 'passenger' side : passenger mirror tilts down.
- if switch is 'driver' side : no tilting of any mirror.

in fact, while in reverse gear, even if switch is on passenger-side (mirror is tilting down), i flick the switch over to driver-side, the mirror starts to return to original position.

hope the above helps, and hope urs will work well soon! else check it up @ BVO.

Hi everyone!

Ok, Roasty's suggestion works brilliantly! Completely disabled the tilt as per his instructions. :)
For some reason, mine doesn't stop tilting either way I flicked the switch... I guess the previous owner did indeed 'hard-coded' the tilt...

It's indeed a splendid ride. :) Enjoying every moment of it... pure driver's car! :)

glad i was able to help. remember to keep your mirror switch on the left tho. i think it wont work properly if its kept to the right.. well maybe just my car i dunno.
enjoy your ride man!
