E90 320i Engine stall

A few months ago i was experiencing engine stalling when I am in "P" or "N" gear. Engine will idle at 800rpm (with aircon on, medium vibration) then suddenly vibrate violently as it drops to 500rpm then just dies. Anything above 1000rpm no vibration at all.

Went back to PML and had the valvetronic replaced FOC and as a precaution, changed engine oil. Car was only 17,000Km then. Was back to normal for a few months, now experiencing violent engine vibrations at 23,000km.

Has anyone encountered an engine stall on the E90 320i? My ride is the first 35 E90s in SG, direct from Germany instead of South Africa. Is there a manufacturing fault in the engine?

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

shit, this sounds terrible...and we always think that the german-made ones are better than the SA ones...

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

since your valvetronic system change (WOW! That's a big change!) solved the issue first time round, seems to point to that again. now go and find out what's destroying the Valvetronic.

Get your ECU updated. I understand that solves alot of problems for those with this problem. Its basically a valvetronic timing parameter change.

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

I thought R&D should be completed by the manufacturer before the car is released into the market?? Perhaps they should pay forumers who do it for free!! (plus cost of car)

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

i kena this on my e46.. its the fuel pump!

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

PML replaced the valvetronic, 2 ignition coil, 2 spark plugs and reflash the ECU the last time. I was hoping for an engine swap :yummie:
They said something about the ECU being able to tune itself to my driving style.

For the past few weeks, it died a few times. Anyway, I've been trashing, really trashing the car until my mileage is abt 7km/L+++, almost same as my 350z liao, Just to keep my RPM up when on the move. Scared wait drive half way engine cut... (no where below 2500rpm unless I stop)

I've just sent it in for servicing yesterday. I just called them to check on the fuel pump as advised. Hope they rectify the fuel pump problem..

btw, I always felt that german made bmws are better. Until this one... My previous E46 was from SA. Build quality is not as gd and alot of funny noises. Till date, I feel that the U.S manufactured X5 is the best. No problems for the past 3 years, except for the amt of petrol it drinks and size of the oil sump that holds endless amt of engine oil.

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

My X3, made in Austria by Magna Styner, without Valvetronic, has no engine problems or funny noises. M54 2.5L idles smoothly (but can't match my ex-Lexus' IL-6 idling though).

My e90...323 has the same problem ,but mind is worst than anyone here...and my car is in PML now ICU unit and my car is less than 1 year..email me at:[email protected] and i will tell you guys what happen to my car...

So far my 320 is going strong. It somehow feels more powerful and rev-happy than before.
No stalling YET but engine is starting to show signs of probable relapse. Experiencing rough idling very often, most violent idling when i turn on my audio. I only have 1 RF kicker amp, 1 small 9" woofer, a 2.3 Farad capacitor installed.

sigh... maybe i'll get a E92, a 523i or a simple Mini Cooper...Shit happens

PML doesnt do anything bout it ? Could increase the idle RPM help to minimize the stalling...

PML already replaced the valvetronic and fuel pump on my car.
Increasing the idling rpm will not be gd cos your avg consumption will also increase.i also requested to have an engine oil change. For now I only get rough idling at times, engine is also more fuel efficient than before, almost 1.5km/l more, doing an average of 9.8km/l.

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

I know this is almost a 4 yr old thread, but would like to check if anyone knows what might be wrong for e90 320i engine to stall. Encountered engine stalling in Neutral during idling at a car wash and while reversing pretty frequently recently.

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

by the way, if go to sitesponsor workshop, plug in to diagnostic can check what is the version of the ECU and check what is the latest version?
if the version is outdated, perhaps go to PML make some noise to update new version?

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

A quick check......
mine is a E90 2006....would PML still entertain me ? sigh

This can be done outside right...mine is a case where at several occasions the engine stalled when the A/C is switched off....after parking the car. (on P). weird and at times when parked and the engine is running...the RPM is fluctuating. And noticed when this fluctuation happens....and i turn off the A/C the engine stalls. Checking it now at Khang Auto....as the car in under their warranty :(
some bros say that it is the fuel pump and some say the cause is the ignition coil.

Waiting for feedback.

Thanks

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

fuel pump, ignition coil, valvetronic motor, etc - these are "common" parts that fail especially your car is 5 years old and if 1st owner has not replace these items before

and the worst nightmare is gearbox up lorry

welcome to BMW !

Re: E90 320i Engine stall

Sounds scary if is indeed the valvetronic motor thats spoilt...my car is 3yrs plus liao, Im the first owner till now. mileage ard 94k km already. My warranty already over and Im still contemplating whether to go bk PML or site sponsor workshops as dunno whether site sponsor workshops have the proper equipment to do proper diagnostics.

My experience with PML has been pretty fine till now, of cos I do encounter nonsense things like its normal, etc. haa haa. Maybe I have to check it out before sending my car into which workshops. My windscreen washer reservoir is leaking still. Wah like many things spoil...sianz.....
