E90 - FinalDrive

Hi

has anyone encountered any "whining" sound - from their auto transmission from 0 - 70 kph and vice versa when slowing down ?

PML diagnosed it as the newness of the final drive (due to newness of the gearbox ) and suggested remedy is to drive the car until 5000 km and sound will disappear ????

I am also experiencing it- like an aeroplane whine when hi-fi not properly grounded, only less loud. Done 1200km so far. Any newbie having the same problem?

According to PML - this is a "common and inherent" issue with all E90s.

Their Service Manager DID NOT even want to check my car when I raised the issue thru my sales rep one week ago. I was told to go home and drive the car another 2 - 3000 kms and the sound will go away ........

What pisses me off in writing this thread is ...... I refused to take no for an answer and insisted that someone take a drive with me 3 days ago and the service rep said that the sound is NOT normal and took my car in.

24 hours later - I was told that their resident ang mo engineer tested the car and said that they
WILL change the final drive. Stock to come in 2 weeks time

This is a load of crap.

looks like I will have to highlight this to them , apart from my steering wheel not centralised, my steering wheel vibrates slightly at 80 kmh, my cabin rattles....sigh. I am booked in on next Monday though.

To any PML Senior Management who may be reading this thread....

I have been a staunch BM supporter.....this E90 is the 5th new BMW that I got from PML in the last 3 years ( excluding a pre-owned 320 cab and an M3).

so I do have a little experience in running in a new car.....

whining sound from the final drive due to newness !!!

The guy who told me this ought to be hung on your flag pole in front of your Alexandra office by his ding dong

Jack - Thanks - just want to highlight to other E90ers....not to take this shit

bugger don't even have the basic PR to at least take a look, listen and assure the customer

this won't be the end of the story...... I am taking this all the way up to BMW AP

National Day coming soon, dont hang his ding dong on the flag pole lah. Visitors may mistaken the ding dong for our national flag.

Just shaft the big flag pole his arse!

Mystic, thanks for highlighting this problem, I will insist they check my ride properly too. Hope it is nothing serious tho'

I fully agreed with you. I am not sure we should go to BMW Asia and complain? I believed they should be aware of his problems. I have tried calling them (Ang Mo) but they seems to be "bochap" with me. They keep pushing to PML and said they cannot do anything. I wonder what is their role here? If they continue to bocha and PML also bocha then we are dead. Is there any lawyer out there that can help us?

Guys, I have the same problem. Got my car in 28th June.. and the sound started from day 1...

Went to the Alexandra. Was told that it will get better after 5000km by the services adviser... Then I keep calling them and they told me to wait for a so-called expert who is currently back in germany, who will be back by end of the month, so that he can check the noise.

Finally, I got fedup and called to arrange for another booking schedule and throw my car there for 6 days.. (went oversea).. when I am back, they say that they have resolve the problem... due to some rear drive stuff.. dont understand what they talk anyway... but after they change the watever parts.. the sound is gone...

It is true that there is some inherent fault with the E90, especially the 320i final drive. I was told quite a few got it changed liao

But i guess they will tell u that they have not heard of it, else every single owner will drive in and hope for a replacement..

Apparently they will change the oil to see if it gets better before the factory engineer will allow for a change.

Hi, what is "Final Drive" it is one of the part in the engine? sorry I am blur lah...

Its the "gearing case" at the rear of your car that connects the center prop shaft to your rear axle drive shafts.

The sound could be cause by bearings on both the drive shafts or prop shafts. May there is some inherent leak on those seals that they dont want to tell you about? Just brainstorming, dont shoot me.

Can advise which service advisors were involved in this case and fix the issue? I'll try to go direct to them. Please PM me.

I als have the whining sound when the accerator was depressed. Initially, I thought it might be due to poor routing of the speakers signal and power cables, causing interference. But right now, it seems that it's because of other problem.

Hi bros,

Just an update. i will be collecting my ride back later in the evening with the rear axle (final drive i guess) changed. Initially, they all said the same, that it is not run in yet. But to play safe, they test drove with me and found the noise to be exceptionally loud for a brand new car, hence the change. I will chk again if the noise perisist. My experience is, they are all very nice ppl and I reciprocated too. Be cool.
