E90 - Oil Change

Hello

I would like to change my engine oil soon.... mileage about 5,000km but it does not make sense to go back to PML (I am assuming that their prices will be relatively expensive).

Questions:
(1) Has anyone changed his/her E90's engine oil at one of the specialist workshops? (i.e. not PML).
(2) Do they have stock for BMW oil filter?
(3) Will PML play punk and void warrenty because of an oil change thats not done by them? :screwedu:

Thanks
achtung

Re: E90 - Oil Change

err hmm my mileage is 4848km at this point, must also change oil?

if we go together got discount boh?

Re: E90 - Oil Change

I am KS.... usually change oil at 5,000km and max at 10,000km.
I don't trust the 25,000km oil change interval.

Discount is unlikely... from what I gathered, it is S$20 for labour excluding oil and oil filter. I got lobang for relatively cheap but good oil. Will be using the Castrol SLX-A3 (BMW approved oil) which costs about S$80/bottle (4L).

My only concern is that the E90 is fairly new and am wondering if the specialist workshops have the oil filter for our cars. Last thing I want is for them to use something that looks like it should fit.....

Re: E90 - Oil Change

keep posted pls :p

I know it sounds a little disgusting but a photoshot of the oil changed would be great to see how black they are. I also dont quite believe we can wait till 25k km

Re: E90 - Oil Change

You can get it done at BVO or J4C. Did mine at 14,000km with Mobil 1. So far so good.

As long you don't reset the service interval meter, don't change non-spec filters, add-on gadgets, etc...I think should be fine. Don't tell me they gonna extract every car's engine oil for evaluation when they are in for servicing. IMHO :)

:lol2: doub they will do an oil analysis....
But they should be able to tell if the nuts/bolts/screws have been loosen.

So which WS did you go to? Did you have to bring your own oil filter?

Re: E90 - Oil Change

Not sure about OWS so I really can't comment. Have not seen any Oil Analysis done on this oil in BITOG http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
IMHO, a 50 weight oil might be too thick for normal driving. It might be more suitable for racing or track use. I am sticking with BMW recommendation of a 30 weight oil.

Mobil 1 0w40 is a fully synthetic oil, this means that it is either a either a Group IV, PAO (polyalphaolefins) base or Group V, Ester base. It is not some hydrocracked Group II or III oil labelled as "synthetic". The Castrol SLX is also known to be formulated with Group V Ester base stock and the folks in BITOG swears by it.

Redline is a boutique oil company like Motul. They are not made by Oil Majors like Shell, Exxon, Total, etc. Both of these oils uses Ester based stock too but they don't get themselves certified by API and car manufacturers (I suspect thats the case with OWS).

If you have some time, check out the BITOG link I posted above. Especially the Used Oil Analysis section.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will probably try BVO.

Bro, all engine oil after using will turn black. It is the viscosity of the oil that is important. Todays synethetic oil can withstand very high temperature that's why it can last longer. BTW, I'm a qualified motor vehicle mechanics. I served as a vehicle mechanics during my army days.

BMW knows what they are doing when they say don't need to change oil before the reading ask you to do so. I follow this on my previous E46 and no problem. I was told by the German Area Service Manager that it is a waste of money to change it quicker than necessary. But of course there won't be any harm if do it more often.

That's something new! Hehe, then maybe you can become BMW-SG's technical advisor!! :)

err, make me a little nervous. so far my car is still working fine. i think i will do mobil-1 0w30 on my 15k oil change.

btw. i added that CAS http://www.mycas.com.sg/special.html into the engine oil. make the car runs with less vibration from the valuetronic engine. any comment on that will be great. thx.

I was one too. Learnt a lot of things but nowadays the cars are so advance until the old army land rover

Re: E90 - Oil Change

If I'm not wrong, my last change was Mobil 1 0w40. Anyway, if one is worry about the warranty issues, then it would be better just do your service at PML and don't even consider servicing outside. IMO

Hi Pingman, I am no chemist but honestly I doubt there is anything for you to worry about even if you should stick with the 50 weight oil. Lots of people are running on 40 weight and 50 weight oil here in Singapore. Besides most of us don't keep the car for the entire 10 years. So do breathe easy ;) and if you want to be really safe...... change to a BMW approved 50 weight oil. :) The Castrol RS 10w50 is top notch. I have seen used oil analysis on this oil and it really protects the engine. Superb!

However, based on what I have read on various oil web sites, putting after market additives into your engine is a NO NO :naughty: . They may not mix well with the engine oil that you are already using and besides the oil majors like Shell, Exxon, BP (Castrol), Total, etc. would have more $$££¥¥ to do research and would have put in the best mix/balance of additives, detergents into the engine oil they are selling.

Here are 3 sites which do not support additives. Do read them and you might just decide to dump out all your oil and put in new :D :) :)

I am not too sure about Mobil 0w30. It is not available locally except at Carrefour when they import directly from the USA and maybe some other specialist oil shops like Forklift and Gee Boon. If you want to use a 30 weight oil, please make sure that you see this on the specification "BMW Longlife-01"

Engine oil is a very interesting topic to me :yummie:

Mobil 0w30 is not a BMW approved oil http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_0W-30.aspx
Mobil 0w40 is a BMW approved oil http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_0W-40.aspx

Of course cannot lah. Army vehicle no valvetronic, no steptronic and no electronic lei. One useful thing I learn is that you will not be conned by those mechanics.

Ahbeng,

Mai kiasu leh only 4848km (wah nos si bei swee). I thot I was kiasu changed mine at 9,000
at BVO. I brgt my own Torco Racing Oil recommended by some bros from this forum.

Re: E90 - Oil Change

oil change won't void your warranty as long as you use oils that meet BMW specifications.

you can buy your oil filter from PML, ~$15-$20 if you're unsure of the filters from external workshops.

i did mine at 8000km mark at autobacs. $10 if you bring your own oil. less if you buy oil from them.

cheers

Re: E90 - Oil Change

achtung,

i think you're bmw-sg's very own Genie47...... muahaha,

may i ask, do you think 0w-40 mobil 1 or Castrol SLX-A3 would be more suitable for a car that sees light track use and is revved to high rpms frequently? or perhaps other oil recommendations?

cheers
