Engine oil + petrol = trouble?

Ladies and gents,

Just asking for your expert advise and opinions. What would happen if a bit of engine oil(say 200ml) is in your petrol tank? Will something "unfortunate" happen? Thanks in advance!

Engine oil is viscous (thick) and its none combustible.

There are two filters in the fuel system. First one is just at the fuel pump and the second is just below the front passenger seat under carriage.
These filter will be clogged up by the oil sludge (chemical reaction of engine oil with petrol becomes lumpy).

Suggest you take out the fuel pump assembly and check the filter. If indeed there are deposits, change both fuel filters.

Cheers!

200ml is about a packet drink or can drink volume...

hehe Thanks guys for clarifying my curiosity and for your speedy reply. Fyi,LUCKILY nothing like that happened to my car.The question just pop up in my mind and I would like to share the question with you all. Thanks again!!

if you're adventurous enough, you can DIY a bit and clean up your fuel tank as much as you can to reduce the contaminents.

remove your rear seats by yanking it in an upward motion. it shouldnt require much strength. get the seat belts out of the way.

remove the layer of sound insulation.

you'll see your fuel pump. twist it in an anticlockwise direction. it's pretty much like opening a jar of jam. put the whole thing in a bucket or something since petrol is now dripping all over the place.

remove your fuel and put them in the bucket. it'll be easy to use a hose, like how ppl clean their fish tank.

the engine oil is heavy and it should all be neatly settled at the bottom. suck them out using the hose in a similar way. reduce the contaminents as much as possible. i'm not sure if the reserve tank contains any engine oil, it all depends on your petrol level at the time engine oil is poured in.

pour the petrol back otherwise the car will not start, and replace the fuel pump.

i'm not sure if the filter is fine enough to trap engine oil. i suspect they may still pass through and clog up your fuel lines up till your fuel injectors as they are much more viscous.

try to keep your fuel tank as full as possible all the time (with petrol), try not to go below half tank.

be prepared, at any stage in your future journey, that your car will splutter off and die, or, mucho white or blue smoke coming out of your exhaust like a choo choo train. it'll be good to keep the PML towing number handy by your side.

Alternatively, you can pay PML several hundred dollars to clean out both your petrol tanks.

drive slow and dont do hard acceleration as this increases the sucking strength of the fuel pump.

tell u guys a joke. once i went out wif a really pretty gal. too pretty for me n too tall for me la. when i got home i noticed my temp a bit high (prob was the alcohol in my head!). anyway that was my dad's opel then...so i parked at the refuse collection point (below my HDB)...n tried to put water into radiator fearing that it may hv dried up.

found a very long hose connected to a tap....popped open the hood...waited 10 mins for it to cool...screwed open the lid....n proceeded to drown the tank. after about 2-3 mins i realised its still not full! anyway i decided to turn off the tap..n realising there is no leak i parked the car n went up to bed.

next day...dad work me up..."ah boy! wot the hell did u do to the car!!!??? i blurr blurr.....looked at him...he said u come down take a look....walao...whole carpark filled wif smoke!!! i told him i just added water to radiator! anyway...car can start...but hell lot of white smoke kept coming out. after letting it run for 5 mins....we gave up....n no sooner a fire engine came! ya some neighbour called the police.

well to cut the long story....car was eventually towed to workshop. wot i actually did was put water into the engine...not radiator tank....they had to change the filters n drained the entire engine n flushed dunno how many times before it became ok. not funny....moral of story....pretty gals can make u gaga...

Engine oil in petrol is never a problem. In the amounts that you mentioned, (assuming that you got a full tank) the ratio is about 1:300. The issue that the guys mentioned may not work cos the oil will have mixed into the petrol. It is like mixing 2T in fuel for the 2 stroke engines.

What is the possible outcome?
I can think of a few issues:
1. The oil fouls the plugs (quite unlikely)
2. The oil fouls the Catalytic Converters (more probable)
3. Some deposits on your exhaust ports (will clear over time)

Would probably recommend that you drain you tank and forego the fuel. The cats are just not worth it....
