Hi All

Pls advise as im a new owner of F10 528i. When i. Driving in heavy traffic for 60 mins,my oil temp reads at about 90degree which i guess its normal

But when im just cruising along highway for just 30mins...the oil temp will go close to 120degree. It had never pass or touch 120degree.
.
Im just wondering is this even normal. Shouldnt it be when in 1 hour traffic, the oil temp should be hot at close to 120 degree while on highway as its cruising, it should be 90degree?

Mind is oppsite..hight way oul temp reads close to 120degree and heavy traffic reads 90degree

Im finding out more as im going up North n worry if i drive for 6 hours straight on northsouth highway...the oil temp will go beyond 120degree

Pls advise ..thanks so much

Hi personally never seen my oil temp move past the 1/2 way mark no matter what i'm doing. No idea how many deg is 1/2 but it hasn't budged past it before.

No point asking here as no one knows your car's history so best to bring it to a workshop and have it checked out.

Oil temp is also dependent on what then engine is doing so just sitting in traffic idling at 700 rpm with the radiator fan on would generate less heat then on the highway with the rpm at 1600 or more rpm.

Hi rssid

Thanks for your input. In tat case i guess mine is normal as yours ..as mine had never pass the half way mark. Btw, exactly at the half way mark reads 120 degree.

Are you referring to the oil temp or coolant temp? The temp you see in the dashboard are normally coolant temp.

Mine reads 97 -99 c most of the time. And like 102-105 max. If ever in a hot stop light / traffic.

As Long as your drive it seldom hits 105 c. As the flow of air keep a it cool.

Above 105c, the fan activates and it will blow to 87 before it stops and the cars heats up again.

So I know if anything above 105. There is a problem with the car. Thermostat or sensor or radiator or something.

I concur. If oil temp, probably will be slightly higher than coolant temp and would be norm to be around 110-120deg if you have oil temp gauge

My temp sit pretty much at 12 o clock position no matter what I do. If yours does anything else other then that it's time for a checkup

mine is 90 plus even after driven for more than 1 hour. 120 degrees is high indeed

Try driving without the aircon on. And you will see the engine temp rise higher than 97 into the 100+ range.
the radiator fan will not be runnning all the time when the aircon is off.

My F02 is usually about 100degrees.
However, it became 120 degrees, never bothered since there was no warning yet.
Went to mechanic for oil change and the ODB found out that the grill shutter was stuck in a close position.
So, air cannot flow into the radiator!!!!

Mechanic said this is common for BMW.
Most do not fix the shutter motors.
The mechanical open the shutter (like your curtain blinds) manually and then disconnect the motor so that the shutter is in a OPEN position permanently.

Now, my F02 is happily at 100 degrees. Never close to the middle point.

Hope this helps.

My oil temp always at middle, there was once it crept up a little and I messaged my workshop immediately and he said nothing to worry about unless error lights start coming up or the temperature goes higher and higher. Thr next day when I drove it went back to normal

I will still be somewhat concerned. Got to monitor closely as engine overheating is no joke. But BMWs can be quite quirky in terms of symptoms.
