F30: Wind noise updates

Bro tortoise you the man!!! Now you not only give me new hope for the wind noises you also make me itchy to order M exos : )

Drive safe man : )

Trying new things to stop the noise or at least minimise it, main thing is still the way the seals are made, I reckon its a design issue. The exterior ABS frame aint so good and seems to be taped on, it can 'flap' at higher speed with the wind thrashing it, thus it can trap air as well which will send wind gushing for the top sides of the glass, which explains the noise!

Hi Guys,

Got my 320i on Tuesday, road noise level is definitely higher than my previous ride
Merc C180 7G. Should we gather more F30 bros to stage a big protest at PML, especially
if Bro Tortoise manage to solve the issue by having additional seal.

Is the seal design for Singapore or Malaysia hot weather all year round ???? Our Malaysian
bro have similar complaint about road noise.

One way to make the complaint visible is annouce the wind noise issue at BMW official facebook page.

:whipper::whipper:

I'd suggest any F30 owners with such issues to lodge a case with the AD, there should be sufficient amount to make our voices heard, else they'll just treat it as remote cases.

Anyway they cant do much as well, it aint mechanical issue and I dun think BMW gonna release a tech bulletin to solve this, but a change of seals should be done to see if it works, so far I've sent in my ride once, but the seals aint changed. I'll ask PML again when I sent it in for servicing (tho I prefer to do that @ MA)

Yes sir, now waiting for them to call me , they ordered new seal kit for me so gonna give that a try, cos it seems some cars in the US did this and it worked. Do u knw if our Malaysian friends managed to get their problem with wind noises fixed?

It should work, if u look at the rubber lining outside the windows, u might notice a problem, at least for mine. Its like abit mouldy and there should be a wax-like protection thats no longer there. It happened to my previous S4 that I have to use a rubber conditioner to treat :p

already got f10 bro go pml bang table due to wind noise. do a search. solution is turn up your ice or invest in a nice exhaust. for quiet go for lexus next car. double confirmed quiet.

Neither the sound volume or exhaust will help in diminishing the noise (beyond comfort level) unless u wanna ur hearing to go first

But the Lexus is a good idea, I enjoy driving my RX450H than the F30 if I wan a quiet drive hahahahhaaa

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

Dear all, this is NOT a perm fix yet nor eliminate the noise off. It however helps to reduce the wind noise. I've to keep experimenting till I get a better insulation. Meanwhile, stay tuned!:lol::lol:

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

The wind noise issue is almost everywhere... Not just the F30s in Singapore...

The main issue would be due to regulations.

With the stricter emission criteria (euro 4, euro 5, etc), they are forced to reduce the weight of the car in order to squeeze in more performance and other goodies...

One example would be why the F30 is on RFT.... The F30 is sitting just nicely to meet the current emission criteria for this weight.. With the additional wheel in the boot, it will have to sacrifice some other stuff, or lower the performance output of the car...

Another example would be the panels on the F30.. You can feel that they are actually hollow, and they do not have much sound insulation or packing behind them... Ask one of the bros here that removed the panel to replace to the M Perf ones... After putting some foam tape, there is no more sound from the air con expansion / contraction...

So well, 3 series is marketed as a middle size sedan, not exactly in the same category as the 5 series... The new merc C class are also having the same issue now...

On a side note:

I dun think PML is under BMW group.. PML is under Sime Derby Group... So their profits here only go to themselves... BMW Group only get the OMV of the car...

Anyway, something interesting in how much the AD earns from our car....

Let's say the car has an OMV of 43k...

This is how much goes to cost..
7% GST
20% Custom Tax
100% ARF (Additional Registration Fee)
Addtional costs such as registration fee, Processing charges, around $165
6 month or 1 year road tax...
And then COE...

So with a 90K COE, the car price is actually around 190k... The rest goes into the AD's pocket..
Of cos there is rental, advertising fees, Authorized Dealership fees, Distribution costs, freight costs, etc etc...

That is why for a similar car, parallel imports can easily slash 20k off the price the AD charges....

So now think about it...
BMW gets 43k (well.. not profit)
Singapore gets 145k...
And if you paid 235k for your car, PML gets 47k...

Of cos this is an extremely simplifed calculation of how much goes to PML, probably much lesser...

Oh, forgot to mention, they return you the PARF at the end of the 10 years...

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

just because to meet euro 4 euro 5 standard and the car rattles and wee wong wong = epic failed

bmw rew campaign re-emphasize that they only build one thing and that is Ultimate Driving Machine .... they have failed if what you said is true

my take on this is ... cost cutting to maintain (due to increase cost) or increase profit margin ... not just bmw ... all car maker

Yeap, it's happening everywhere... In order to showcase performance and driveability, I think they all decided that too much comfort is a luxury... That's the direction the market seems to be moving now... It doesn't necessary make the cars cheaper to manufacture...

You will see makers starting to downsize engines... And more supercharged engines on the road as compared to turbo charged. (or a combination of both)

Yeah the new Ms are all running on V8 TT instead of the previous V10s. Even the Bentley GT is running that now. The hybird Cayenne deploys an Audi S4 3.0T with hybrid power. In the name of greenery.

Frankly why dun they stop the wars and spend all the money to save the Earth? Mankind is plotting our own doom hahahhahaa

Anyway weight savings can be done properly without sacrificing insulation. Maybe we can look @ foam insulation thats light but yet providing better insulation and strengthening the chassis. For sound insulation wise, I only look @ carpets, foam ones, light rubbers etc, Bitumen and alike will kill the power, imagine manufacturers spent so much R&D to reduce the weight and u spend a little to kill all of it hahahhahaa

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

Anyway it aint that bad, look on the bright side, things can be better. To me its only slight vibrations and wind noise, else the N55 performance n handling are nice, I enjoy every moment in driving the F30 kekekkee :blahblah:

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

Ok, done the remaining layer of SP for the side front door and viola! the wind noise is gone (whatever noise u can hear now is prob due to the thinner window glass). Its a cheap and easy fix, anyone can DIY this easily. Will be posting more pics soon

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

I really cant tahan the wind noise ah~! Subconciously will keep trying to wind up the driver side window thinking that its not fully up :furious:

Re: F30: Wind noise updates

I think its PML that has the 90.5k. BMW AG only got the net of 38k minus COGs.

SG too small of a market........

wt_know,

The big issue is for China and US market per car profit is much lower if compare to Singapore.
e.g. F30 320I OMV =38,000 ; COE =90,500 ; Sales price = 218,800.

BMW AG gross profit per F30 320I ~ S$90,000 WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's 3-5x gross margin per car compare to US and China market. If BMW singapore buyer
continue to be a docile and non-complaining, they would not raise the service level.

:wtf::wtf::wtf:

MoMo boy, think what you're experiencing is general bad sound insulation on the F30, do u also get the whistling wind noises?
