SINGAPORE: Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said a firm stand must be taken against unreasonable demands placed on teachers.

He said this in his speech at the ministry's annual Work Plan Seminar on Wednesday.

Mr Heng said the majority of parents are supportive partners of teachers.

But he highlighted instances of excessive demands made by parents on teachers.

Mr Heng gave the example of the mother who filed a police report upon finding out that her son's teacher had cut his hair before his PSLE oral exam which the mother claimed had ruined her son's S$60 haircut.

Mr Heng said: "The simple fact is that the son was reminded over and over again to trim his hair. And when that failed, the school sent a letter. And the mother's response was that her son was dyslexic, and therefore forgetful.

"As one writer puts it in one of our media commentaries, by raising such a hullabaloo, 'the mother did herself and her son no favours'. Now, if parents do not show graciousness to others and respect for rules, our young will not do so either. Soon, discipline will be eroded. The tone in our schools will deteriorate, and the tone in our society too."

In the good old days when there was caning in schools...we don't hear of any parents complaining or reporting to police...cutting or trimming boys' hair was quite a common occurrence...but $60 for a young boy's haircut was unheard of...

Nb can afford $60 haircut is big deal?

Yesterday I cut hair only $8 but I give barber $12 because my hair very long and he took long time to cut it and I appreciated his effort. Irrelevant.

For discussion sake, if male teacher has long hair, but is neatly kept, should the teacher be asked to cut his hair short? I mean, the school have rules for student, but teachers are working adults...

i think it depends on how long is long and how neat is neat? different people have different standards... but i do agree that you have to lead by example..

Many years ago when I was still schooling, I saw my teacher queuing up at a Singapore Pools booth. I went up to him and said "老师，你也赌搏？". He was embarrassed and gave me a sheepish smile.

lol.. i think if its out of school its fine.. i am not saying they can be rapist or what.. but if the teacher clubs and gambles at casino.. he needs to make sure its not openly known such as on his FB which his students can see and find out about. Teachers are human too but there are some things that you dont share with your students.
