Wondering if any of the experts here could help me on the above. Few days ago, when D was engaged it didn't show up on the instrument cluster and the gearbox couldn't upshift (hence stuck on 2nd gear, S and M1-5 don't work as well). However, after driving for 10-15 mins on 2nd gear the gearbox becomes ok again and shifts smoothly per normal and no problems. The issue arises again when the car is started after a being idle for somw time(ie every morning), hence have to drag it along in 2nd until the damn box becomes ok again. Took it for a quick diagnostics and the system reads out a "steptronic switch" fault, which probably needs repairing/replacing. Don't know why it's ok after a while, maybe the gearbox needs to be heated up first??
Note that the auto transmission warning light does not show and all gears except D, S, M1-5 are showing/working as normal. Also no problems physically moving the gear lever from N to D. Mine's a 3 yr old E46, 50,000km done.
Any bros out there experienced this problem before? Can it be solved by merely changing the steptronic switch? Any idea about costs? Heard that it shouldn't be a major job.
