hi all...
i just got my E36 yesterday

is 1995 E36 318 manual

and after i got it, straight away i go for mountain drive
but than i realize, its really different from other E36 that i have drived.

the power steering have so much 'power'
is like i can easily turn the steering
(not freeplay, but the steering is very soft, easy to turn)

so .. i get very less feeling of the road
from what i known, bmw steering is design to have not much power
so that the owner can feel the road...

so i dono whats wrong..
is there any place i can adjust to disable the power steering?
or reduce the power?
i dun enjoy driving this way... now i feel like i driving japanese modern car (no offend here)

sigh

hope some sifu can help

thx

Re: help.. steering problem on E36

trust me you don't want to disable power steering, unless you have biceps like bobby, haha.

'Light' steering may not actually be a problem, unless there is excess play. If you prefer a heavier (note, not tighter) feel, I'd suggest either getting wider tyres or a smaller steering wheel, or both.

cheers and enjoy the car.

Re: help.. steering problem on E36

it suppose be like tat even u change all wear & tear.
I also feel light in low speed becos i got big arm like bobby. you either got strength or You like to consider change E46 steering wheel or go 140km & above, you will feel the "tightness", forget abt mountain drive. or if not change tyres to 235mm haha..

Re: help.. steering problem on E36

Check the bar on your power steering pump if it is higher then the recommended this is what you get.
It could be due to your alignment also. Check CAMBER it could be on the negative side.
The positive side will (EAT TYRE) and will have a heavier feeling on the steering.

oic... :)
i not wan to disable power steering.. just wan it to feel like.. a BMW..

actually what surprise me is that, it is light
eventhough the tyre at front is 225 wide and 17 inch....
but the 225 tire n lowered body.. cause the fender being damaged by the wheel.
later i will change back to 215 tire...

this afternoon .. i will bring to AutoBavaria,
to check on ... CAMBER and Power Steering pressure
before that, i will double confirm n check on the tire pressure first.....

thanks a lot guys.. i will post more update soon

i did everything, still same, but try on a E46 steering, it feel better. so i conclude my arm like bobby.

Re: help.. steering problem on E36

if you are feeling this one side heavy one side light.
It will be quite difficult to used words to explain and whether they will do it for you?
Your steering rack is not CENTRE.
actually at the rack we will need to centre it?
How?
Centre your present steering wheel.Take the bellows out and try to used a caliper and measure the length of both the side of tie rod (inside the bellow). Hope you can follow. Both will have different length.
Try to adjust the tie rod so that you will have almost the same length.
Your steering wheel will be out.
