Hi all,

New to this forum but found it extremely interesting and useful. I own a 520 but is looking to upgrade to a 730i. Toying btw buying a brand new one vs a used. Any comments would be much appreciated ! Also, understand that it has a new engine vs the 2004 model. Anyone knows the difference in fuel consumption ? or the specs for the 04 model. Thanks in advance.

There is a new 730i engine. Came out a few mths back together with the facelift. Pumps out 258bhp as opposed to the older engine which pumps out 231bhp. The new engine is supposed to be more fuel efficient.

Some has found the 730i with the 231bhp abit under-powered. Got to ask yourself what kind of driver u are, how fast u wanna drive etc as there is no end to power and no replacement for displacement (unless u go turbo route).

Re: Hi and a first quick question

By right the facelifted 7er should be more fuel efficient coz it's valvetronic engine (well at least that is wot the factory claims )

Welum CKH,

Have u take a close look at the pre facelift and face lifted 730i? Which one u prefer?

are u going to mod ur 7? if u are, than there is nothing much u can mod on the facelifted 7 cos its a valvetronic engine....

I am doing 15+ L / 100km on my 7. Fuel consumption very much oso depands on your driving behavior.. I use to do 12+L/100km.

Re: Hi and a first quick question

The new 730i makes 258bhp, the pre face lift one 231bhp. However, a couple of other forumers, including myself have upgraded the ECU mapping of the latter and I expect the power increase to nearly match that of the new car. There was a definite power increase ( butt feel ) as far as John's ( who reported a substential dynoed power increase after ECU remapping) and my cars are concerned.
Of course there is no way that we can bring down the 300 Nm peak torque from 3500rpm of the older engine to 2500rpm of the new engine.
I have driven the new car and yes, it feels a tad more torquey then mine, but not by much. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, the old engine, remapped, would do fine.
However, I find the new 7's looks to be sharper and hadsomer then the pre face lift version. Interior wise, only minor diff berween the two.

Also expect a vast price diff between a recently used pre face lift 730 and a brand new one. I think the new one cost about $280K?. A one year old pre face lift model can be had at near $205K or even less. Therefore, for the price of the new 730i ( normal wheel base ), you can get a fairly new used 745Li ( very shiok, but thirsty ) even....your choice.

I also prefer the facelifted 7. Doesn't look too heavy from the rear view. I think it is only going for $260k. Possibly as low as $245k if u have connections etc.

Re: Hi and a first quick question

Only $260K now? wow, how far and fast prices have dropped huh.

I still prefer the pre facelifted 7... if u put both the facelifted and pre facelifted side by side with both having full ACS kit, the prefacelifted will look more fierce.IMO.

Re: Hi and a first quick question

Thanks all for your feedback and comments. I test drove both the new and a 1.5 yr 730 and came to the below conclusion:

1. Engine - the new one is silky smooth, both in terms of acceleration and gear shift, while the old one felt a bit lethargic on jerky.

2. Interior - no substantial difference

3. Exterior - the new one does look more sporty and "fit"

4. Price - new one going for 250K, old cheaper by 70K at 180+K

Still weighing the pros-cons before making a decision. Also, heard that the govt will either do away with COE or reduce import tax next year to "porttray good will" since it is going to be election year. Car prices might fall further.
