High fuel consumption

I have a one yearold E46 318i sedan which is Valvetronic. The reason I bought it because I heard Valvetronic models give good consumption. Some even up to 600km per full tank. My question is, have any of you with the similar model achieved such a figue?

Secondly, the manual says that 8.4 litres gives 100km but I need about 13litres of petrol to achieve 100 km which works out to 7.5km a litre? I drive most of the time on the expressway. So what's wrong? :helpp!:

Re: High fuel consumption

think 8.4 litres/100km = 11.9litres/km per the manual. should be achievable if there is more highway driving. full tank is +/- 63litres. doing 600km would give 10.5litres/100km or 9.52litres/km.

i am doing 9.6litre/100km or 10.4litres/km ... 17" rims with 60% highway/40% city driving... 17000km mileage...

if you do 13litres/100km or 7.69litres/km with mostly highway, then maybe it might be time for a oil service. or are you on 18" rims man???

Toto, if you rely on the computer reading, not accurate one.

For e.g., my computer tells me I am doing 9km/litre when in fact I am doing 7km. Best gauge is to calculate the number of litres you topped up, drive it till orange light on dashboard comes on to tell u to top up, at that point, take reading on mileage clocked, then run another tank and do the same thing. After that, you will have a fairly good picture of the rate your car is drinking petrol, be it X km/litre or Y litre/100km.

Re: High fuel consumption

ya u told me b4....will try it...how much ur 2.5 doing?

Re: High fuel consumption

Hi ! Joe.

Please check your tyres pressure and if necessary an oil change.
My E46 318i sedan (1.5 Years Old) is doing 9.5~10KM/L (70% Highway and 30% City) with 17" Rims :)

PML recommend oil change ~20,000KM but many members do oil change in between. Some members even every 5,000KM :)

Cheers :)

I have a 3L too, but averaging around 14.5L/100km, according to the onboard computer. And I just did Inspection II. 99% city driving. Hmmmm. Wonder if my right foot is too heavy.

I am doing 6.5km to 7km/litre or 15litre to 15.25litre/100km. Blardy high! 70% city 30% highway.

Re: High fuel consumption

no i think u r about right....mine dropped after some mods.

Yuin, I think in actual fact, if your onboard computer is as "inaccurate" as mine, I suspect u might be doing 17km/litre without u knowing. For my car, at half way mark of the fuel gauge, I wld have clocked 250km. At the 1/4 mark, I would have clocked around 350 to 360km. When the orange light comes on, I wld have clocked anything between 400km to 440km (depending on my driving for the week).

If you are doing better than these indicators of mine, you FC is probably better than mine. If not, it means your onboard computer is as inccurate as mine. Keke.

P/s: Btw, I do not top up petrol to the max. I go for auto-stop. So if you pump until your tank cannot take anymore, my indicators wld not be applicable to u.

Re: High fuel consumption

My ride is slightly better. On 17" rims, at half tank usually 280 to 300km and at empty 490 to 500km. After the grounding and Volker plugs, I think the FC actually improves abit..

Benny, that is very good fuel consumption. Alot of 520s can't even achieve what you have, no joke. How many % highway and how many % city (or some say urban or start-stop) driving in your case?

Re: High fuel consumption

Guys,

I'm interested in what mods you did to increase FC.

T6, I think my FC is slightly worse than yours. My 1st full tank went about 440km. I think I got a bit too carried away, since I only got this car about 2 weeks ago. Hehe

I guess I don't use highway very much, so FC bound to be higher.

Must be that damn peak-hour traffic along Orchard Rd/Bras Basah (morning) and Rocher Rd (evening).

Andy,

I would say 60% city and 40% highway. By highway, it is short distance too. I take SLE enter through YCK and exit Yishun..
The OBC register 11.2 to 13.5L/100km

Thanks Benny. One thing for sure, your OBC is as inaccurate as mine. My OBC reading in l/100km shd be around 14l/100km.

I think your 17" rims with 235 all round tyres do make some diff. My FC was certainly much better before I switched to the 18" staggered. But even when I was on 17" all round running 235 tyres, I am nowhere near what u have attained. I shd say by running 18" staggered, my FC has gone up by 10%. From 480km last time, I can now at best attain 440km before the orange light comes on.
