Recently got some tragic NZ news, so I listen to the news, a bit sad. But then........

since when did new zealand become xing xi lan? WTH happened to niu xi lan?

And since when did Australia become Au da li ya? Nobody says Au zhou anymore? Is Singapore going to become shi2 le4 puo1 again?

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

We must follow china the big brother.
Better start to speak with 鼻音

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

both is fine.

澳大利亚, 澳洲
means the same thing.

using 澳大利亚 is more proper, correct. (that's what i can understand)
and also prevents people from relating it to 欧洲 Europe. (when people dun pronounce it properly.)

as for 新西兰, 纽西兰.
depends on which part of the Chinese speaking crowd you are with. both is fine.

one example is those channel 8 shows. Bryan has a chinese name Wang Lu Jiang, 王禄江.
but he would be referred as "布赖恩" (Bryan) in the show.

not too sure about the shi2 le4 puo1. maybe some will do that if they want place emphasis on "happy".

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

Somehow I cannot get used to the new words for New Zealand.

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

Hitmee is right for the first time. We follow biggest Chinese speaking country in the world.

Ang mo country can anyhow change, because these are just translation. Singapore's one is opicial. Like Hitmee can translate as 洗踢米 or 吸剃秘, but his official Chinese name cannot anyhow change, must always be 打我。

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

just to add on that .... i also heard 印尼 become 印度尼西亚 (indonesia) and Laos become some funny name which i dun even knw how to pronounce in chinese.... :huhhuh:

With China coming up and Singapore sucking up, they are moving towards their way of pronounciation which is supposedly the right way of saying. I'm also a little disturbed. Niu xi lan sounded more normal to me.

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

ok 印尼 i know is just a short and convenient form of 印度尼西亚 so nothing has changed.

so if New zealand change already, then how do we say New York in chinese from now?

And the other thing is, I'm not sure, but did I hear France became fa lan si, instead of fa guo?!?!? I mean, the official newscaster's official pronounciation from official media stations. Official one hor.

See, the thing is all these alternate chinese names I've always heard in other imported media, like all this difference alternate chinese names for France and Australia, they've been around for a long long time, but then since when did Singapore official media's usage change man...

So now our market is not ba sha anymore but cai shi chang??? follow china all the way?

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

The new pronounciations are skewed to Mainland's convention, example Wan An became Wan Shang Hao.

Soon De2 Shi4 will be Ji4 Cheng2 Che1 and Ba1 Shi4 will become Gong1 Gong4 Qi4 Che1.......

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

I still used Burma over Myanmar. But for Bombay, I changed after the M1 ad that went "MOOOMBUY"...

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

Before China became the Big Brother, most people followed the translation made by Taiwanese. Heard Mr. Lee's first Mandarin tutor came from Taiwan. Many angmoh also used to learn Chinese in Taiwan. Now people just want to follow every standard set by the Big Brother.

But we learnt BA SHA since school. But one thing I hope they'd change is percentage. They used to say something Ba Xian but it's Bai Fen Zhi something. Ba Xian is just wrong. It's directly translated frm the English word of percent.

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

ok i can understand the rational behind the change. But I'm thinking... when did that happen. Coz it was not so long ago only that New Zealand is still niu xi lan. I'm thinking the policy change from the master controller is only a few months old?

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

RB - you're not alone, people are complaining. Tourism board recently had to backtrack when someone wrote in to ask how come "Chinese New Year" on English-language promotional material became "Spring Festival."

I can't stand it when China imports say 我国 on TV when referring to Singapore :shakehea:

Incidentally, Christchurch is 基督城, which means... Catholic City.

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

What about the time when STB outsourced their promo material chinese translation to some Chinese guy, and all the Chinatown when translated into chinese became zong guo cheng. I think someone's AWS must have kena docked that year man.

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

For 澳大利亚 and 澳洲 I can understand as 澳大利亚 refers to the country and 澳洲 refers to the continent. Although it's the same thing...

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

Anyway, to you Cantonese speakers out there... How do you pronounce Singapore? Is it Xing as in "New" or "Xing as in "Star"?

Re: How to say New Zealand in chinese?

Chinese is a universal language, just like English. Chinese in different countries can name stuffs in their own Chinese names based on local history and culture. To follow every standard made by another country is not necessary, and looks a bit too kowtow.
