How to wash engine area?

I asked my boyfriend to help me wash the engine area under the bonnet. He says that area cannot touch water. Its very dirty and dusty. so I could not take it anymore and I hosed it the other day. Nothing went wrong. Is that right?

Re: How to wash engine area?

U need to add 1 more action, do not let it dry up naturally, try to intentionally dry it up... with an air-jet is good.

Re: How to wash engine area?

When I sent my car for grooming, they used a high pressured tornado-gun to sort of "blow dry" and at the same time it gets rid of those dirt stuck in the really tight corners in the engine bay.

You can then use some gel/oil that gives your overall engine-bay compartment a wet-like, new look after that. I am sure there are some car-care products for that. Just as personal viewing pleasure. :D

Re: How to wash engine area?

When you send for servicing, ask the workshop to wash it. They will know what to do.

Re: How to wash engine area?

PML just uses those high pressure water guns that we see being used to wash the void decks to "wash" the engine bay when you send in for servicing.

Is this really the right way to do that?

I wash my car engine area near the radiator too. Be careful not to let water seep into exposed electrical parts like the alternator and electric fan motor. You don't want unnecessary short circuits...

Re: How to wash engine area?

For me, it is a no no. I will take degreaser to clean up valve body, shocks mounting & body work around the fender.

Most importantly, the word BMW must be clean. Otherwise, how to open bonnet & show off during meet up?

Re: How to wash engine area?

I just spray water everywhere under the bonnet. Only place I would avoid is the intake inlets.

Here's how I did it, use those tyre wax, on a sponge and wipe it, it'd be really black like the day you first bought it :D

Wouldn't the surface be sticky and trap dirt?

Indeed an important issue.

Re: How to wash engine area?

Very important - don't spray water at the exhaust headers ride after a ride. might crack due to rapid temp change.
