rex7_vtec,

I believe you would have already done all the necessary research, so please don't flame me if you don't already know -- this SWI-X works like a learning remote control, i.e., it will memorise the IR codes sent out by the remote control for your 3rd-party head unit, and then map them to the buttons on your steering wheel.

While it works with many HU, there is usually a slight lag from the time you press the steering wheel buttons to the time your HU responds.

I have tried this before (mail order via E-Bay) for a Clarion HU before, but gave it up because I could not stand the delay. This could be an older model, so maybe the newer one works well.

Just FYI, and good luck with the group purchase (must say that the prices have dropped!).

Has anybody installed the BMW Universal Remote Controller? It's supposed to be installed infront of the center rear view mirror. Supposingly 3-buttons programmable controller

jaskin,

last I tried was in middle of last year (around June), bought the SWI-X off a guy from ebay, manufactured in 2003 Dec.

hope that helps.

Also, for some head units, e.g., Blaupunkt and Alpine, there are direct (i.e., electrical) interfaces to the BMW steering wheels.

MapleLeaf,

the universal remote controller is for stuff like sliding gates or garage doors. Don't think it's for a head unit...

emiffy, you have a good point about the delay. never thought of that, but it should be instantaneous...

However, US$69.90 sounded cheaper than S$165...

For those of you who can't access the page,

go to www.crutchfield.com and then search for "SWI-X".

USD69.9 + 8.5%(Tax) + UPS(USD$25) = USD100.85 (base on rate of 1.63 = SGD$165 rounded off to nearest dollar)

Yeah, I thought it could be hand carried. Anyway, at $100++, I will put this on hold, and divert the money elsewhere.

__iceman__,

consider Alpine or Blaupunkt head unit, they both have direct steering wheel control adaptors available.

Alpine confirmed have? What is the adapter part number and the HUs that can link to it?

I'm think hard between a 9835 and a IVA-D300E foldaway 7" LCD screen w DVD player.

Seems like not many installers know about it too.

Play porno movies ah....DVD player in a E46....dun go and sia China mei mei ok !!

Sorry...OT...cannot resist to poke fun.

About remote....most of the HU that I own so far all have their own remote....I seldom use them....cos i can find the buttons on the HU faster than on the remote...I guess its a get use to thingy...but I lazy lah.

Anyway....Alpine remote control needs a bit of marksmanship one.....unlike Sony, Pioneer etc....dun need to aim directly at the small window can get the signal.....but for the Alpine....must aim siew siew then can.

Is should be a KCE-864B. There's a list of HU that it's 'steering wheel compatible/ready'. I'm getting my installer to get the agent to order one. But there woould not be any guaranty/warranty. They are checking out the price before confirmation. Barry, would you have the lobang to bring this in?

check out the details:
http://www.alpine-europe.com/alpine/english/t240.technology_steeringwheel-compatibility-list_.htm

The steering wheel adaptors are also available from other UK sites. They have adaptors for Sony HUs as well.

check out the details: (it says the alpine adaptor costs £47 )

The question would be:

1. Which HUs would this be compatible with? I think one of the plugs go directly into the HU. Not every HU has this facility rite?
