Increasing membership?

Hello all,

What kind of ways and methods do you think we could actively raise the membership in our community?

Please voice out your comments and opinions here! :) We need YOUR help in making this community the number 1 in Singapore.

Re: Increasing membership?

(i) More articles in car magazine

(ii) Radio coverage

(iii) Organize some charity drive or Treasure Hunt for BMWs and publicize it

(iv) Get more external workshops to give flyers away or stick big big posters on their wall

Re: Increasing membership?

Annual car shows? Good chance to display some of our members' heavily modded and chio rides. Main drawback is that we need lots of $$$. Maybe we can get some of our listed workshops to sponsor us as most of us go to these workshops to get our cars serviced or modified.

Just taking a long shot here.........

Re: Increasing membership?

ha... good try rod!!

i would just suggest that each current member to try to invite just 1 or 2 more new friends to join n the sponsors n us organise a open house / carnival thingy... (press coverage would b a advantage)... rod can bring in some Hot race queens to 'brighten up' the whole event... definitely a big hit boz!! :yummie:

:)

Re: Increasing membership?

we can also invite The New Paper to do photoshoots of their face of the year contest with our(read: my) car. i think the gals there are younger than FHM/Maxim...

Re: Increasing membership?

I am gonna be honest here. Dun flame me. Just constructive opinions. No patronising words, unfortunately.

(1) Use subgroups to infiltrate the masses. Subgroups are formed for many reasons - aligned interests, perceived segregation, lifestyles, whatever. We have the core admin group, the Sharkies, the E36s. Each of the groups have their non-forum contact with similar interests in cars and chicks and dining and clubbing and booze and whatever. The topless club might mingle with Saab and Audi convertibles. Some might have met up with some Alfa forumers for social and other reasons. Proven that we have made Alfa friends and stealth BMW-SG forumers via Futsal games. And so on. Recognise and respect the interests and growth of these sub-groups. Cultivate them, instead of trying to develop groupthink and herd the crowd.

(2) Publicity to show that BMW-SG is not a snob forum. Position ourselves as down-to-earth as any other car clubs - unless, of course, we wanna project a niche branding and risk walking a narrow path. No two ways about it. Either we climb down the ivory tower, or we risk losing mass appeal. Remember - we are fun-loving, and our lives do not simply revolve around cars. Gals, heed that.

(3) Forum content must be diversified. Think about it - on one hand we want more chio bu's in the forum, and on the other, there are no TCSS threads to appeal to them. All technical stuffs. Some came to the forum to buy/sell personal items. Others came to seek advice and left. And we wanted more chio bu's? Sure, some other forums (I remembered one with the hokkien name) might be deemed sleazy, but somehow gals felt more welcome over there. More dinners. More movies. More kopi sessions. Perhaps foam party or the likes. Not just Sepang, dyno, and pure statistics on torque if the mass appeal is desired. Again, not two ways about it. Keep it a pure car enthusiasts forum and risk losing the social magnet.

(4) Are we a BMW forum, or are we a car-lovers' forum, or are we a fun-loving forum? Positioning that means segregation. There is no way we could run it purely as a bimmers club and want to expand the membership base without PML selling more cars. There is no way we could run it like a car-lovers' forum and maintain uniformity as far as car ownership is concerned. There is no way we could run it like a fun-loving forum without focusing more on out-of-cars events than only-cars meetups. Where is the ideal positioning of the forum? Fix it and stick by it. Numbers are just numbers. No point having 5,000 members but only 100 are active. Better to have 500 active members who count identify with the forum. And stick by them. Quality over quantity a better bet.

Perhaps it pays to look outside in, and ask a non-forumer what they see in a car forum that attract them, rather than to see inside out.

Re: Increasing membership?

Actually, wot is the benefit of being able to reach 5000 members? Or is it just a pyschological next target number given the current run is already above 3000 ?

Re: Increasing membership?

i think the easiest way is to get pml to recognise bmw-sg as the official car club. i can understand the liability issues considering the stuff we 'potentially' do to transform our rides...but hey isnt there a way round it? if they recognise us...then i m sure every new owner will get to know us.

If BMW-SG is affiliated to PML, we will no longer be independent. That means we cannot endorse anything other than those from PML - products or services likewise. Yep, membership for sure, but we will be leashed like a hound without much autonomy......

Re: Increasing membership?

TripleM,

The benefits, (from my perspective), is a larger group of BMW owners and enthusiasts that we can reach out to, people who have not an idea that such a community existed, and an outlet to make more like-minded friends and to learn more about their rides.

If i hit my target of 10,000 members, manage to persuade 1/3 of them to take up advance driver training, save about 3 million dollars of repairs (and lives) because of people crashing less.. then i would feel really happy about it :p

But seriously..why increase the membership? For me, it's really more of a personal fufilment ever since BMW.SG got started, and that alot of people said we couldn't be where we are today. Anyway, the community is a great place to learn and exchange ideas + meetup with new friends etc.

Again, a lot of people's perspective of what a forum should be, or rather a community, is wide and varied. Let's keep the ideas flowing!

Hi Ryan,

As a side issue, I notice from the membership list that we have alot of members who have not posted or posted a few times and disappeared into thin air. As such, the current membership list may not reflect the true numbers. Are there any plans to clean up the list first?

Seriously, how abt a car rally/treasure hunt in S'pore whereby forummers and their families can take part? Entrance fee will go to prizes or go to charity with the winners getting only bragging rites keke.

Re: Increasing membership?

Eh, just wanted to pen my feelings so please don't flame me.

I'm not a driver and don't own a BMW, I'm happy because this forum doesn't have a strict screening process where people who are not buying any car or BMW cars will be kicked. Believe it or DON'T I was once refused membership to a local conti car forum because I state that I don't think I'll get a car and then the door was closed on me. The way BMW-SG is handling membership is great, drivers, bicycle riders, other makes or non car buyers could come in to learn more about BMWs and how the mod virus is spread from one owner to another. One could come up with a "vaccine against car mod" before buying or collecting a car. :)

I've never been to any meet up before (paiseh lah) in the event that the community would open door to non-drivers or car owners, it would be good to consider them when organising a meet so that it would be easy to reach by those who drive or taking public transport. I'm sure some of the kind souls here would offer to tompang anyone who's staying nearby or in the same estate. (This is just a suggestion, may be ignored and is not saying that the meeting place is "unfriendly" to non-drivers)

Have you guys considered organising charity events to boost your presence in the various estates? BMW-SG could send out flyers that the community is collecting things which people want to discard or some stuff which may be useful for the needy to use. In return donors will be given the calendar shown on the right with a big thank you?

Sound crappy but it's just a suggestion. :)
