Is stock 328i fitted with Electronic Damper Control (EDC)?

Anyone know if the stock 328i has Electronic Damper Control installed?

The salesman suggested that the suspension adjusts in firmness when switching between Sport & Eco modes, implying that the shocks are adjusted electronically. Need to double check if this is true, as PML personnel sound pretty confused themselves.

This presents difficulties if one is considering installing aftermarket coilovers.

Thanks.

Installing coilovers basically disables it.

So stock 328i comes with EDC installed? If so, I'd feel uncomfortable messing with the stock suspension.

I think the answer is YES.

Re: Is stock 328i fitted with Electronic Damper Control (EDC)?

I'm driving the 'luxury' line, which is equipped with the stock suspension and does not come with EDC.

I think EDC is only for those with 'adaptive m suspension', which you can see from the paper of features when PML sold you the car

Most standard F30 do not come with adaptive suspension. It is an top up option.

If they do not have one for you to test drive, you can try test drive the latest Audi A4 high range, it has adaptive suspension, sport mode = stiffer suspension, comfort mode = less stiff. I think their steering wheel feedback is also more beefy when in Sport Mode.

Stock 328i comes with standard suspension. You will have EDC if you optioned in Adaptive M Suspension. I was considering it when getting my 328i in Mar'12. Now regretted not not getting it. The stock suspension are for comfort and thus quite soft. Adaptive M Suspension would be ideal for the ride especially it has the driving dynamics.

Thanks, everyone. I suppose this means an aftermarket coilover can be installed without upsetting any electronic systems.

wow means i kena smoke by my SE also... anyway.. he sux. won't go to him anymore.

Re: Is stock 328i fitted with Electronic Damper Control (EDC)?

Just heard from PML technical staff, who knows the 328i suspension parts used. He claims the shock damping for the stock 328i is electronically adjusted.

If this is true, installing aftermarket coilovers would defeat this feature. An additional delete kit must be installed to cancel out error codes generated by the electronic system, once the stock dampers are disconnected.

Would like to find out if the stock dampers are adjusted in stiffness according to selected driving mode: Sports vs. Comfort (Dynamic Damper Control), or if damping is dynamically adjusted for each of the four shocks by sensors reading the road conditions (adaptive suspension).

Stock 328i do not come with "adaptive" suspension. It's an option. Basically, the F30 come with 3 options, the standard suspension, the M Sports suspension, and the Adaptive suspension.

The M Sport suspension is firmer and lowers the car about 10mm.
The adaptive one comes standard on the 335i and is the only one that is able to change the ride quality.

I'm quite familiar with this issue as I complained about the "softness" of the stock suspension and requested to change to the M Sport one or the adaptive ones, and did some research on it... Not all PML salesmen are knowledgable, nor are their technical ppl. My car is having some issues for months already and all they can say is "awaiting reply from Germany"

Pre-sales: no choice but to really on sales person. ask them to confirm chop stamp before you put your cheque down.

Post sales: you can check if your car has M adaptive suspension.

Hi Seraphblade,

Figured that PML's not likely to include M Adaptive Suspension as a stock feature for 328i.

But does 328i come with "Dynamic Damper Control"? Do the shocks stiffen when switching to Sports Mode, and soften in Comfort/ECO Mode?

Re: Is stock 328i fitted with Electronic Damper Control (EDC)?

from my understanding, I believe that adaptive m suspension drops the car 1cm front and rear compared to normal suspension, AND adds variable damping (via electronically controlled damper valves). this would result in stiffer ride during sports, sports+ and softer rider in comfort eco pro vs regular suspension options. The roll bars etc are also stiffer and thicker (handling package)

don't think the 328i luxury from PML have adaptive m suspension or even sport suspension, just regular suspension (my neighbor has f30 328i I measure his front wheel gap vs mine, 4 fingers for his and 3 for mine)

So, from my understanding:

1) regular suspension - regular ride, no drop, no active dampering
2) m sport suspension - 1cm drop in ride, stiffer, no active dampering
3) adaptive m suspension - this is just the m sport suspension with active dampering
