The speed limit on the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) will be raised to 80kmh from Dec 29, when the Marina Coastal Expressway opens (MCE).
This will bring the speed limit of the KPE, which is currently 70kmh, in line with the new five-lane MCE. In a statement, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said additional safety measures will be put in along tight bends to ensure safety, including reflective strips along tunnel walls and broader lane markings. The 70kmh speed limit will be retained near the northbound Upper Paya Lebar Road exit and the southbound Airport Road entrance due to a tighter bend along those stretches.
In preparation for the opening, the LTA conducted a joint emergency exercise on Wednesday morning with the Singapore Civil Defence Force and the Singapore Police Force. Noting that motorists can drive for more than 12km in a tunnel environment when they use both the KPE and MCE, the authority urged motorists to exercise caution and drive safely.
Motorists who encounter a fire or other emergencies while in the tunnel should dial 995 for assistance or tune in to local radio channels to listen to emergency announcements and instructions. The LTA advised motorists to not proceed any further or reverse if red crosses are lit on the overhead lane use signs. Instead, they should remain calm, turn off their vehicle engines and leave their vehicle for the nearest escape staircase or cross passage doors to evacuate the tunnel.
