Localised vs Full spray painting

Some questions I have below and would appreciate any comment or advice from u..

1) has anyone done localised spray job previously? any downside? i heard from my friend it is doable and the job done at alexandra village is quite good.

2) localised should be cheaper than full spray job? former should be below $100 and latter job is $200 to $300 for one door panel?

3) if some paintwork got chipped off (roughly the size of 5mm by 2mm), can it be fixed by localised spray job?

thanks for reading/replying..

Re: Localised vs Full spray painting

Quite a few workshops that I know prefer not to do localised spray jobs because:

1. Difficult to blend the paint/lacquer to the surrounding areas.
2. Possibility of uneven-ness of the new spray area compared to the older spray area.

No matter how small the chip is, the painter still has to sand and putty over the area before spraying so the target spray area will be bigger.

Cheers!

Re: Localised vs Full spray painting

my views on this:

i once had a car which had its bumper resprayed because of a scratch. at that point in time, i bought into the idea that respraying the whole panel would result in a more even finish.

However, when it was time to sell the car, i realised that car dealers always point at your resprayed panels, especially if its at the bumper area, and say that your car may have been in an accident/fender bender and therefore resale value will be correspondingly lower.

i now intend to only do localised resprays; that way, i can better justify that the car is indeed accident free and that any respray of the car was localised, and done for only minor paint damage like chips and scratches.

Re: Localised vs Full spray painting

Actually I never figure out how they do it...I mean even if spray whole panel, when compared with the next panel, there is still a difference?

Many years ago I did this local spraying thing @ a shop in Balestier. They looked fine after spraying but when selling my car the dealer can point to the exact spot where it was resprayed before...so I guess trained/untrained eye do play a part.

i understand that original factory paintwork consist of 7 layers..and asked a paint shop near alexandra village how is their spray job compared to the factory's 7 layers..he told me they spray 6 layers..is this true?

you will be lucky if they even give 4 layers. most shops only do 4 cotes and 4 bakes.

$200 for door panel and $300 for bonnet..

Re: Localised vs Full spray painting

I think that price is a tad too steep.

based on quotes from shops and friends who have done respray, i would say its around there for a good quality spray job, maybe margin for slight discounts.

i would suggest u have a look at the cars he has done and assetain if the workmanship is up to standard. you can name a price for anything, but its the worth that is hard to quantify.

is this shop any of the recommended site sponsors? i would suggest u go to them as it is tried and tested. if you really wanna play safe go to PML. its gonna cost u a bomb mind u, but they provide a warranty or something like that in case the paint work starts to haze or blur. anything that is not caused by your/ others physical doing.
