M42 IS engine - different batches?

Hi

I was told by different sources that there are 2 batches of M42 IS engine manufactured (or are they referring to the M401.8L in the pre 95 E36s?)?

Is there a different M42 for pre vs post '95 E36s? Can

Also, is the M44 IS 1.9L also fitted into post '96 E36 in SG/M'sia (other than in a Z3?)?

Grateful if the E36 IS bros here can post some pic showing the visual difference in engine and their year (coz I am looking to get the M44 or a later batch M42 if there is a difference).

Anyone has a spare complete M44/M42 to sell?

Thanks in advance :)

Anyone know wat is the diff between the 2 batches of M42 IS Engines?

Can someone kindly advise if this is the later batch M42 IS engine (DOHC 16v) and also how to spot the difference:

Pic examples will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Easy, spot the ignition coil, old batch uses four individual coils that connect to spark plug cables than to plugs..This is the most certain point to note to differentiate new from old, BMW revised the ECU version to cater for different ignition system, meaning that older model M42s not possible to use the single coil ignition system to run their engine unless the new version ECU is installed.

Of course there are some other differences but all those cannot confirm whether is newer or older batch (can work around). For example, the pulley belts, the air-box and the injectors too.

The pic you showed is neither the newer nor older version of M42, it could be a M44B19, notice the MAF sensor? but it does use the single coil ignition system.

Hope it helps. Don't need appreciate bro, just buy me satays and kopi enough liao.:) :) :)

Hi abcd,

The Engine from your pic is a M44 1.9 ltr from a BMW Z3. :)

M42 has 2 versions. The Earlier M42 from the E30 318is (not available locally) with a different intake manifold (like the M40) and the ones you would find on the E36s which has similiar looking intake manifolds with the later M44 1.9 ltr blocks.

Hope this helps.

Re: M42 IS engine - different batches?

Hi abcd, why M44B19? IMHO, M42B18 is great engine. HP and Torque not much different from M44, it has tougher engine block than M44, advantage is it can be boosted and it can run at higher rev. with lesser worry.

Be more precise, M42 has three versions if the one run on the earlier E30 318IS also counted.

E30 318IS (without D.I.S.A. and uses multi-coil ignition system)

E36 318IS (before 1994 with D.I.S.A. uses multi-coil ignition system)
E36 318IS (1994 and thereafter, with D.I.S.A but uses single coil ignition system)

Hi bison, marklee & vibe9292

Thanks for all your inputs. :)

Actually the pic i posted is a M441.9L - errr, where is the MAF?

So the M42 looks exactly like the M44 (with the curved intake manifold) but comes with a AFM (how does this look like? )

So the M42 should look like this below? can someone mark out the AFM for me.. :laughlik:

many thanks

Hi Bison

My initial thought was no replacement for displacement (another 100cc also gd) :lol2:

but like u say, many others have advised the M42 is actually better to chip and gives better torque (low and high end or is it low to mid end) which is more practical for daily drive...

anyway, the M44 is harder to find and not as tough etc etc

so m42 looks the part.

thanks

The M42 has forged internals, which makes it a choice for modifiers. FYI its well documented that modifiers have mix and match M42 and M44 parts.

The 2nd pic is still an M44....the MAF (M44) or AFM (M42) is located behind the airbox

haha....my target before I think my car is track worthy would take much more than a month to do...plus no cash now also. But I'm still very tempted to try track just to see what my car and myself can achieve on the track

E30 M42...looks similiar to the E36 M42...look at the black squarish thing near the top right corner of the engine (according to the image orientation), thats the top of the AFM.

abcd,

The MAF of the M44 pic you posted marked in red...see below. Yup that is still a M44 Block and it's still from a Z3 :)
