M5 Gear knob installation – BMW E90

Hi Guys,

I have always thought it’s gonna be a plug and play modification but to my surprise, there are lot’s of wiring required to be done.
I was attracted by the M knob as it can light up and the lights are according to the gear shift mode and of course by it’s short and smaller size.
Please see pics below for the installation process.

According to the mechanic, there are two types of M knob installations:
1. The normal simple installation which the lights DON’T light up in sports mode. This installation is easy and fast.
2. The full installation which the lights will light up in Sports mode. Takes more wiring.



Where to buy?
Can be from our site sponsors, stockies or maybe any shop which does BMW or even E-bay.

Down time?
Took around 1 hour to install.

Other choices available?
Actually you may choose the M3 or M5 knob. There is slight difference in the indicative markings on the knob. The wiring process is also slightly different. Both knobs will be able to fit the car.

from the pictures, there don't seem to be any difference when you are in D mode or in Sports mode.

the difference is that if u install using the simple installation (less wiring) , in sports mode, there will not be lights at all

yup ... for my m-gear knob, when i push to sports mode ie: D/S ... light is off
yours light up in both D and D/S mode

IIRC, the full install is during D mode, there will be light, if you put to DS mode, the same light in D mode will go even brighter.

And both the R and N lights up respective of the position that you have selected.

wow.. nice share bro..
i have one same with this too..
but dont know yet how to install..

this inspiring me..

by the way, mine e46 325i with push button on the knob..
if change with this. there is no button for shifting.

is it possible ? ?

my car used to have the push button and it works fine now with the M knob and actually better without having to push button.
i am just wondering if the knob fits ur car?

yup ... for my m-gear knob, when i push to sports mode ie: D/S ... light is off
yours light up in both D and D/S mode

mine when on D/S mode the light becomes brighter..............

chanced across this thread. Sweet looking knob. any specific place to look for this as I was trying to google b ebay and most comes up with the manual 5-6 speed short shifter not the Auto ones..likes yours.

Also,
any recommendations where to get this installed here in SGP?

i assume it's all about wiring.
they have wired it in such a way that when in sports mode, there is light.
just like when in parking, "P" lights up.
nothing to do with the mapping.....

The lights are nice but the top of a knob shows the SMG sequences while the gear indicator on the centre console shows the Auto sequences. It doesn't correlate.......

Sorry, where can I see this SMG mode?
I am lost already.
My car don't have iDrive screen
