PUTRAJAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The Court of Appeal on Friday overturned the conviction of two police special action unit officers for the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.
The court accepted the appeal filed by former Special Action Unit (UTK) personnel Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar and chief inspector Azilah Hadri and freed the two men.
The appellate court had, on June 10, allowed Sirul Azhar to include two new grounds, including adverse publicity, in his bid to get the Shah Alam High Court decision declared a mistrial.
However, the government can still appeal Friday's decision at the Federal Court.
