Newbie here and already have an issue on hand

Hi all,

Just got myself an 2008 E60 a few days back and already have questions and need help. I'm not able to post in the 5 series threads as I'm still a newbie hence I'm putting in here.

OBC indicated that engine oil was at max when I took over the car. Less than a week later at about 200km clocked, OBC prompts me to top up one liter of Engine Oil. Indicator reads at Minimum now. The next service is indicated to be about 4000km more.

The car had no signs of oil leak and went through an STA check as well. I understand that the car requires engine oil top ups at some intervals. My worry is that it went from Maximum level to Minimum level in a space of a few days and in less than 200km. Is this normal?

Meanwhile, I do not know what grade of oil the previous owner is using. Would topping up 5-40W be reasonable here?

Thanks guys in advance!

Check it out bah..... if oil level is still high means sensor spoil. If oil level really low try top up once and see what happens again. If drop very fast again then most likely leaking somewhere liao.

Stupid question now.... How do I check the oil level visually? Is there a dipstick?

Re: Newbie here and already have an issue on hand

Use the bc stalk (aka signal light) to check EO

Common for oil sensor to fail as it's a wear and tear part

Change the oil sensor plus do an oil service as you do not know how long the oil been sitting there

Sorry but How do I use the bc stalk to check?

Last oil change by previous owner was in June this year.

Re: Newbie here and already have an issue on hand

You can bump up the rocker switch on the turn signal stalk until it displays "OIL."

Depress the button on the end of the stalk and it will show a MIN-----MAX graphic and a little clock while it calculates the oil level.

Do this after your car has warm up for ar few min.

Last oil change in Jun is almost time to change, either 10k or 6 months. There's nothing like fresh EO for your car

He got idrive ..... Bc stalk is for those without idrive.

Oil level sensor - cheap part......

Haha I can't help w iDrive then, still using the low-tech bc stalk.

Yes, the oil sensor ar $150 or so parts only, need to change by removing the oil pan.

Should I change ATF also, even though not required yet?

Jetspeed u need to keep up to speed with the "Search" function. ATF is the mother of all tech questions in this forum...

Thanks... Read through and prob will go for it...

Re: Newbie here and already have an issue on hand

Bushings checked and slightly worn... Prob wait a few more months before working on those. Aim to get the lubes and liquids flowing smooth first.

Btw... Just saw that Giant having sale on Mobil 1. $14.99.

The Helix I bought was $28.80... That's almost double!
