Overheating

Not sure why the previous thread on overheating was deleted as it contained useful information for fellow drivers so I am starting a new thread to share my experience for the benefit of others who may encounter the overhearting for the first time.

Last Saturday after leaving Vivo City for a short distance, the orange overheating warning ("drive moderately") came on for my E90 LCI 335i and after a few hundred metres it turned to red warning and limp mode ("stop engine"). After start-stop and limping to the nearest surface carpark, I called for BMW Assistance to have it towed to PML Alexandra. The tow truck arrived in about 50 minutes after my call and the repair was done on the 2nd working day.

The water pump, thermostat was replaced on Tuesday. Including coolant, bolts and labour, the bill was $1,660.75.

Luckily most drivers understand my car was in distress mode with the hazard lights on and did not horn at me during the slow crawl to the nearby carpark to avoid blocking traffic.

Advantage of calling BMW Assistance: free towing and includes free replacement of cable under worldwide recall.

After replacing the thermostat, the aircon works better! Previously, the car got very stuffy when it was raining but now the temperature control works fine.

Re: Overheating

water pump failure is legendary for e90 after 80-100k mileage
it is better to replace it before it fails to avoid inconvenience

Re: Overheating

Someone in the previous thread mentioned that he changed the water pump at 50k.

Mine is 45k but the car is over 4 years old (May 2009 registration).

Re: Overheating

my car 5 years 8 months and 88,000km.
how ?
need to replace water pump ?
cannot last till scrap ?

Re: Overheating

almost impossible to last until scrap 10 years
it is better to replace at 1/2 life mark like 4/5 years
else before car end of life then replace a new water pump ... bo hua
my 2009 e90 4.5yrs old 85k mileage also crying to replace water pump
i talk to the mech ... no error code why must change ... waste money
$1k+ for water pump and flush coolant and labour
the mech said, up to me ... yes no error code
if got error code means your car cannot move liao and
if you are 1/2 way on the road ... sibei sian

Re: Overheating

no warning code appear on OBC, no CEL and check ok
the info/warning code can only be seen thru workshop disgnostic tool
just like ktnpl case, if you see code and cel, means call tow truck liao

It will be better to get it repaced as soon as possible. It is definitely inconvenient when the car stalled on the road but it could be worse. Imagine you are halfway up the long ramp at Takashimaya carpark or in the expressway doing 100kph going with the flow when the warning comes on. Then you will only have another 100m or so to bring it to a safe place before it goes into limp mode or stall altogether. In limp mode, the car cannot climb the car park ramp which means it has to be pushed all the way up :0

Previously on E39, water pump bearing seize & breaking rubber belt (together with power steering pump rubber belt). It happens at 6:30am in ECP while i was doing parallel parking.

It break exactly 50k km after my last change.

Re: Overheating

What were you doing so early at ECP and parking at 6.30am?

Throwing used tissue papers ?

Hmmm I wonder ...

To wash up for you....:D

Re: Overheating

Mine kaput when around 5 year mark.....110K Km.
There is no sign, just break while travelling along ECP......limp to fort rd, then turn to small lane, then seek for tow truck. Do not try to start the engine when stalled, over-heating will jammed the engine and the repair will be more than just the electric water pump.

S$800 for the pump + service charge ~ 1K at BVO. Half a day job.

Recommended to change at about 5 years mark.
Hope this help.
