Pre-loading axle ???

PML threw some technical jargons at me... anyone knows what is meant by pre-loading the axle?
Is it a tedious job and what does it entail?

Can the shift quality of our E46 transmission be tuned? I am finding my car's transmission shifting somewhat jerky these days.
